big sister, baby brother

gracie is so good with silas. actually great. so great that sometimes its really unbelievable. she was also great when lily was a newborn, always very gentle, especially for her age at the time (2 1/2), but this time she seem so much more…. grown up. aaaaaahhh! did i just say that?

she loves to hold silas. she calls him “baby brother”. she is very good at holding him the right way, supporting him properly. she especially loves holding him on her chest. we always tell her that was our favorite way to hold her when she was a baby.

here silas actually has his eyes open. the kid still sleeps a lot – praise God! he’s only had a few tough nights, and they’ve been easy in comparison with our other kids as newborns.

so a couple days ago gracie was holding him and he got a little fussy. she also is great at calming him down. she says, “it’s ok, it’s ok” over and over. he must find her voice soothing because he usually calms down – this is also why her carseat is right next to his. while she was snuggling him he actually fell asleep on him – oh, just the sweetest sight!

in these last few weeks i haven’t taken time to delight in my kids. its been hard. really hard. its seems, as my husband pointed out to me today, that when one kid is being really great, the other one is falling apart and our attention goes to the one having a harder time. this leaves little time for praise and delight. so sad! i did get a lot of time and opportunities to praise the girls, gracie especially, yesterday while sean had to work. they responded really well to it (duh – of course!). today, on the other hand, was not nearly as joyful. but i may have some answers/excuses as to why: i think lily might be getting her 2nd molars in (she has been chewing on her fingers the last 2 nights), and gracie is getting a bad cold, just in time for her first day of school tomorrow! what to do, what to do? the director at gracie’s preschool believes that by the time a kid shows signs of a cold that they are past the point of being contagious, that they are contagious before any signs are there. so she allows kids to come if they are a little snotty. so i’m hoping gracie will only be a little snotty tomorrow so she won’t have to miss her first day back to school. but even more, i’m hoping all the loving the big sister has done on her little brother hasn’t passed the sick bugs to him. newborns with a cold are no fun at all!

What tender pictures! I love the way siblings can be a source of love in a way parents can’t.
