my biggest girl is getting bigger (in 18 days!!!! AAAAHHHH!!!). but more on that later. for now let’s focus on the fun details of planning a party. if you know me at all, you know this is something i really enjoy. i still lack a lot in the hostessing department (i prefer to stand back and watch, rather than be the conversationalist), but i so enjoy all the details that can go into parties. all the TOTALLY UNNECESSARY details. but they are so fun! gracie is turning 5 and she settled on a “splash” party. here’s a little history on my girl and her party preferences: when she was 2, she said she wanted a farm party when she turned 3. fine. sounds fun. before she even had that party, she informed of her choice for her fourth birthday: mermaids. we adjusted that a bit to accommodate the boys invited, and called it a pirate and mermaid party. again, before she even had that party, she told me what her “five birthday” would be: hello kitty. ummm, are you sure dear? i’m really not a big character party fan. not against going to them, i’d just prefer not to host one. yes, i am a party snob. but, of all characters, hello kitty is probably the best, in my opinion, to focus a party on.
so why the flip flop invites pictured above, you ask? because on february 15th, my girl changed her mind (thankfully before i raided the dollar section at target, filled with all things hello kitty), and said she wanted a valentine’s party. in may. hmm. thankfully a few days later, she exercised her prerogative once again, and changed to a swim party. we don’t have a pool. so a splash party it is! sprinklers and water games are good enough for her! so, in an attempt to secure better weather, we set the party date a few weeks further out, into june. i’m sure as it approaches, i’ll fill you in on the details. i’ll be making towel rolls (a beach towel with a carrying handle) for each of the guests as a “favor”, so i’ll show those.
so these invites started out as just the flip flops. i bought these pre-made for like a buck. turns out the were so cheap because they are so cheap. but i could print my own info on them, i already had them, didn’t have to buy something else, sooo the frugal mom inside me decided to go with them and make the best. the invites are designed to send as just the flip flop with a little paper flower in an envelope. but they felt too cheap, so i added the ribbon with some hot glue to cover the original yellow straps, then put the flower on top of that. then i was going to put the flip flop on some striped paper to look like a towel, then i remembered! i made a bag a couple years ago out of terry cloth and oilcloth and i still had the scraps of terry cloth left. i know, its shocking that i kept the scraps. i had enough terry cloth to cut into exactly enough towels. i sloppily zigzagged the edges, hot glued the flop on, and voila! i was done! not too bad for only spending a buck (plus postage). now let’s see if i can be so frugal in the rest of the party planning.
i also realized that i forgot to say what i was thankful for on my last post – ooops! so here’s for today:
1. a good night’s rest (the boy slept thru the night!)
