they got me! my dearest friends and family threw me a surprise party on sunday night. i still can’t believe they pulled it off! here’s how they did it: first off, sean has tried to throw me a surprise party before, but i found out. i’m a bit sneaky. ok, nosy. no, no… i think inquisitive is a better term. anyway, as soon as i suspect anything, i generally ask lots of questions to figure out what’s going on. i also had been pretty clear with sean for a long time now that i wanted a party for this big birthday. but this is such a busy season for us that it kind of fell to the wayside (or so i thought). so they (sean, my friend and neighbor katie, and my best friend in oregon, nicole) sent out 2 evites, 1 real and one fake, to throw me off. the one i got was for a small party for both sean and i on this coming wednesday. they also sent out a warning email to everyone about how nosy and suspicious i am.
so sean came home from his men’s retreat on sunday at about 5. he came in and said katie and her family were going to have us over for a quick dinner. this happens all the time, so i didn’t question it, although i nearly veto’d it because i was so grumpy from a long weekend and a cold. so we packed up the kids and walked over to their house. as i opened the door all i heard was “SURPRISE!!!!!”.
i was most surprised by my parents being there (they told me they’d be here on monday) and by my mother-in-law and sister-in-law and her baby. that meant so much to me that they’d make special arrangements to be there for this.
nicole sent a big box of decorations to katie, the hostess, since she (nicole) couldn’t be there. together, they did such a great job. there was a centerpiece on the cake table of a tree branch in a turquiose urn with scrappy leaves and birds on it. such a great idea! i’m going to have to steal that one for something. hmmm…. the also used newspaper in such creative ways: as a tablecloth, as filler in a vase, and as pompoms. and my mom brought down some gorgeous hydrangeas – my favorite.
it was very casual, just hanging out and relaxing, with a pile of kiddos crawling at our feet. my sweet friend, joy, made 2 beautiful and delicious cakes. they were incredible! they went perfectly with the bird theme.
