bible carriers for kiddos

does anyone feel like we’ve lost the sight of what christmas really is?
it is so often all about what you get, especially when you’re a kid.
now, i’m not a total grinch and not giving my kids anything, but i do want to give in a manner that is respectful to the celebration of christmas and to not encourage utter gluttony.

so here’s our philosophy on christmas gift giving (to our kids):
3 gifts for each kid (as a reminder of the 3 gifts jesus was given)
1 “santa gift” – usually the toy they asked for or the biggest gift. last year it was bikes.
a few small gifts in their stockings – i try really hard not to give junk that i will want to toss in a week.

so this year we decided to get our girls new bibles.
not that anything was wrong with what they have, but the tiny ones without pictures are too advanced for gracie to read and comprehend right now, and lily really doesn’t get something new very often, so it would be nice for her to get a bible not handed down.

since they bring their bibles with them to church every week, i wanted to make them little bible covers with handles. the last thing i want is to be carrying their new bibles for them!
but they also bring them into “big church”, where they have to sit for a good hour+.
inevitably, at their ages, they need a little entertaining.
so i added a little pouch for each of them.
gracie’s has colored pencils and lily’s has crayons.

then behind each coloring pocket is another pocket that i stuck a dollar store pad of paper into.

these really weren’t that hard to make, just took awhile of pattern drawing and math (2 things that are not my strong points!)

each layer is lined with flannel to add a bit more heft to the cover, and it’s removable.

i also used button/elastic closures to hold the bibles shut when they’re carrying them, and also on the coloring pockets.

i’m hoping i can write a tutorial on this one, but each bible is sized differently, so it’ll be a lot of work! maybe after the new year!

Way back in the day… Nineth grade home-ec class, we made Bible covers (I went to a Christian school) These are the easiest things to make. The only thing wrong with making them back them – everybody used ugly quilted fabric.

These are really cute, I love the fabric.

  17. 17

Love it! though I must admit I was really hoping you were going to offer one (or four) for sale at the end of the post! ;)

A friend sent me a great article just the other day that has helped us know how to proceed with gifts for our kids this year. Three gifts: one of value (gold), one for personal/spiritual growth (frankincense), and one practical gift (myrrh). Here's the link: http://heritagebuilders.com/question10.html

  18. 18

these are adorable!! we do the same thing with the 3 gifts, but we don't do santa (my kids are terrified of him and we want them to get the "real" meaning of Christmas) so we usually do a larger joint gift (last year was a huge basket of dress up clothes). these bible holders are precious!!
    merry christmas!

I really hope you have time for a tutorial. Anytime before May would be good for me. :)

I feel the same way about gifts. We haven't ever limited to 3 for the gifts to the Christ child, but I love that idea!

  21. 21

Cutie patootie! Love the covers, really good idea. Just out of curiosity, what bible did you end up getting your girls? There are SO many different ones out there and I don't know which one to choose. My kids are similar in ages to yours (6, 4 and 2). I'd love your input!

  22. 22

lindsey…..i LOVE this! if you ever put this in your shop…i would love to buy one! one for my kids…and one for me, too! i have been wanting one for my Bible, but haven't found what i was looking for as i am not fond of the plain leather ones! i also love the pocket on the front for pens, pencils, highlighters and such! that was a GREAT idea! you should sell those in your shop and Christian book stores! beautiful work!
