i’m a bad gifter.

does that surprise you?

’cause it still surprises me!

i don’t know why, but i have THE hardest time choosing gifts for someone, even my best friends.

so here’s my new theory: when i see something i know someone specific will love, i get it right away, then hold on to it for their birthday, christmas, or just because.

note: i am only buying things that have an intended recipient.

i am not just buying something i love and think someone else will too, and hold onto it for those last minute gifts.

i want to be more purposeful about my gift giving and have it be intentional and specific.

so i have THIS little “thank you” gift in the mail, to someone special who has made this part of my life more beautiful.

i so hope she enjoys it!

i picked a few things for very specific people at the creative connection, and i’m sure i’ll do more in a couple months at the queen bee market.

are you a good gifter?

how do you do it?!

  1. 1

I saw that in Lisa’s shop! I wanted it!! It is soooo cute!
I love picking out the perfect gift! It can be tough though. For Christmas I make a lot of my gifts. One of my favorite gift I make is a scrapbook for Matt’s mom and dad. I have been doing that every year for like 12 years! Do you make a lot of gifts?

  2. 2

you know me, i like coming up with personal/meaningful gifts. and even if creative gift giving isn’t your “thang,” creativity is. you inspire people (me) to be creative, and that in itself is a gift. how many times have you helped me follow through on something i desired to gift, but didn’t have the ability to do on my own? i can’t count, but that too is a gift.

  3. 3

I’m like you. I HATE last minute gift shopping ~ I think it gets pretty impersonal. I try to pick up things throughout the year as I see them … although sometimes I forget about what I’ve gotten!

  4. 4

I love to buy (and make) gifts. If money were no object, I would do it more often b/c it seems while i am out and about i always find perfect things for my friends and family. Sometimes i treat them and buy my finds which makes my heart happy.

Ok, love that necklace so much and really need to treat myself to one.

i love shopping.. especially for others. christmas is fast approaching & my hubby & i have to buy 15 gifts every year or more when we get new family members. i would love to draw names to help with finances, but it didn’t seem fair for the unmarried family members. i know christmas is not about gifts, but i love to see others receive tons of things! heehee! so this year, we made a plan to buy one gift a week until christmas. that way we will be done early & not have a big chunk of money gone at one time & wonder how we will pay bills. also, i shop sales. last year after christmas, i bought my nephews a couple pairs of shirts on clearance for this coming christmas. and just need to buy a toy each. and i’ve been winning some giveaways lately so i’m stashing them away as christmas gifts. i’m half way done! woohoo!

that is so adorable! i am not the best gift giver peson…i find that i’m late giving bday gifts a lot because i’m waiting to find just the right thing and i don’t want to buy just any ol’ thing.

I like to think of myself as a good gifter! I make lists all through the year – by person or just by ‘women’ ‘men’ ‘young girls’ ‘boys’, etc., and then refer to that as a I decide on what to get. I think of their interests and try to reconcile that with how much I’m willing to spend – on both ends of that idea. I would much rather spend a bit more to get someone something they will really, actually, use and need then to spend a bit less only to have it be clutter in their home and life because they didn’t want/need it. The latter seems like the bigger waste of money (though that doesn’t mean I spend a crazy amount either). On the other end, I don’t feel the need to spend a miniumum either if what is given is meaningful and appreciated.

The big thing for me lately is finding things that the person can really use or will truly appreciate – takes a bit more thought but I’m trying not get things that could just potentially clutter up the other person’s life – that’s no gift.

I can’t believe you are a bad gifter…that is a huge surprise to me. i started a long time ago picking up things that i knew someone would love…for their birthday, just because they had a bad day or for the holidays. it has worked out so well for me…for the most part…typically my biggest issue is i over get…not a bad problem.

but, i really try to think of the person that i am getting the gift for…i love finding that perfect gift and is going to put a huge smile on their face. also, i think of the gifts that people would not buy for themselves.

I am right there with ya… I’m a horrible gift giver! I really spend quite a bit of time/energy either making or picking out just the right thing, but I can always tell when I get it wrong!

  10. 10

What an awesome gift! I just purchased this necklace and I’m in love with it!! :)

  11. 11

I sooo get it . . . I also have the hardest time because I am a perfectionist and I wait until the very last minute because the “perfect” thing never comes along and then I end up going out at midnight and buying something at Walmart because I am out of time. I have been trying to get things for people when I see them ahead of time now and that seems to work (if I don’t forget that I bought it!) ;)

  12. 12

Have you seen my gift blog?!? ;) I love shopping for gifts, the more personal the better. I don’t do well with collecting gifts during the year. Often I forget I have them stashed in the closet!

Really, my blog is just a collection of gift ideas that *I* use as a resource also. My daughter has a birthday party this Saturday. This morning I clicked through some of my posts and was reminded of a favorite gift that will be perfect for the birthday girl. We’re headed out to the store to pick it up in a few minutes.

    Beautiful necklace!

  13. 13

It’s beautiful. How she NOT like it? What a thoughtful gift!

  14. 14

I keep an ongoing list in my phone. If someone mentions something or I see something that gives me an idea, I write it down. Then, when I’m shopping for a gift, I look there first to jog my brain.

My mother-in-law was particularly excited at her last birthday and amazed at the things I got her (nothing overwhelming–one of the things I got was a skein of yarn, but it was something she had been interested in).

  15. 15

Thank U – I love it! And I’ll be looking in the mailbox everyday!
hee hee jk = but I do think I need this necklace :) love ya and looking forward to seeing you this weekend!!

  16. 16

is it for me?! I was dying to win it when Lisa was giving it away a few weeks ago. Giveaways of hers and yours are still ones I have yet to conquer. But yes, when I see things I buy it and I have a “gift basket” in my closet where I keep everything until it is time to give it. It makes me feel good being so prepared too!

  17. 17

I definitely buy gifts throughout the year. I try to keep notes on the types of things my loved ones like (authors, movies, music, food, etc.) and then when I spy something I think they’ll like, I buy it on the spot. It is so relaxing to have their present already on hand when their birthday or Christmas rolls around. Plus, I LOVE being a good gifter! To me, seeing someone excited about what I gave them is more exciting and fulfilling than getting a gift myself.

  18. 18

I try and do the same thing… buy something for a specific person when I see it. Unfortunately, the last time I did that I mis-placed the gift and then had to scramble to get another one when my friends birthday rolled around and I couldn’t find her present. Oops! Hopefully that won’t happen again!

  19. 19

I totally know what you mean!!! I am the worst gift giver too!
Just wanted to let you know that I gave the pleated poppy a little shout out in my latest post:
