new pillows for the playroom

i was giddy last weekend when i snuck in some time for sewing for myself.

our playroom couch was looking pretty dull with blah pillows that didn’t really reflect the fun that this room should evoke.

i have been saving all my extra strips of fabric from all my ruffled items, and the pile has gotten pretty big.

i was thinking i’d make a quilt with these scraps, but i should’ve known better- i’m way too impatient to wait to save up that many scraps.

instead i made some scrappy strip pillows, and a couple others for fun.

for the striped pillows i simply sewed the ends of the strips together and then cut the strips to the length of my pillow, plus 1/2 inch for the seam allowance.

then i sewed all the strips together and used the chenille backing from the pillows i was replacing.

the other pillows were fun, too.

i’ve been dying to use this abc fabric for so long, but never knew where.

i used a bit of it here in the kids’ bath for the french door revamp.

i added chunky ricrack around the edge.

does anyone know how to do ricrack easily?

i have been sewing for a long time, and i just can’t figure out an easy way to do it!

i have a really hard time making the corners look right – its a good thing i’m not a perfectionist!

i also am not so sure if i’m doing the pompoms correctly.  i love how they turned out, but i had to use so many pins and go so slowly.

i despise both of those things: sewing slowly and using pins.

does anyone have any helpful tips for me?

I have zero insight for you, but as a super lame seamstress, I can tell you that whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it right. Those pillows are beyond adorable. And hel-lo alphabet fabric…where have you been all my life?!

    Absolutely ADORABLE!!

AshleyAnn – just go for it! I am totally self-taught. I don’t know what I would do without YouTube. I am getting ready to start my first quilt. It is a doll-sized quilt – I want to work up to a big one.

Super cute – love the idea of ‘freshening up’ with covering pillows. We do it regularly!! In fact, I have some fabric waiting for me on the dining room table. My daughter wants to help! I have no tips, I’m self taught and I keep it super simple!

Also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the french door photo display!!! I need to find a door!

So, so adorable. I am not kidding you, you could sell anything and everything you make! I am more than certain Target would carry you. If only you had more hands, right?? :) Thanks for sharing your talents…learning to sew is on my list, as my grandma just gave me her machine. You come first on my list of inspirations!

    cute, cute, cute!

Those are super cute. I love the abc fabric! I hate to use pins when I sew…but sometimes you have to darn it! Did you sew the pom pom fringe on to the front sides first and then sewed the back side on? Or did you put the front and back together with the pom pom fringe in the middle and sew them all together at once? Not that I am some great sewer, but I would think if you attached it to the front side first it would be a lot faster…

So cute! As far as your corners go, I’m not entirely sure what the problem is, but if you’re having a problem with them turning right-side-out nicely, you can trim the seam allowance diagonally across the corner eliminating the extra “bunch” of corner on the inside. If the problem is the pillow not filling out the cover enough causing puckers, having a very puffy pillow or making or cases the teeniest bit small can help.

And as far as the pom-poms and rick-rack go, well they look great! I don’t know if there IS a very quick and easy way to do trims if you want them to turn out right.

Love them with a fierce jealousy, than I need to repent. When I’m down with that I’m definitely making this post a favorite to copycat for my littles, too!

  14. 15

Sew your trim on the front fabric first, then sandwich it with right sides together with the back fabric and sew them together to finish the pillow. I don’t use pins when I do this, you wont need to either since you can see the trim as you’re sewing it on! Hope that helps!

    Super cute…I love the pom-poms :)

    These are super adorable pillows!

Love the pillows Lindsey! I really need to make some pillows for our family room. It is on my “to do” list!

  18. 19

Absolutely love them! I love the pompom trim.
That chenille fabric… I purchased a ton just like it 6 years ago at my favorite fabic shop. The owner told me the factory that manufactured it was closing. Who knows if all that is true but I sure do sill love it. A version with a blue background and white stripes covers my dining room chair seats. I’m about to recover them and just might repurpose to pillow backs!

I have the same issues with rick rack!! So sorry I won’t be able to enlighten you on the subject. But if you hadn’t of said something i wouldn’t have noticed anything, actually I still don’t notice anything! These pillows are adorable. I love the idea of chenille as the backing and the pom poms are awesome!

  24. 26

thank goodness you also hate sewing slow and using pins!! i despise the those two partners in sewing!! ARGH!

  25. 27

I follow (through blogs and on twitter) a LOT of women who sew, but YOU make me want to sew. I am sad too because my mom used to be quite the seamstress and make all of her own clothes, etc. But that was all before my time, I have never even seen her at a sewing machine. I wish she would have taught me when I was young. I am not really interested in clothes, but would love to know how to sew for house projects. Maybe I need to pull a “Gussy” and teach myself already!!!
