family olympics

this is my youngest s.i.l., courtney.  these photos pretty much sum up our family – hilarious!

a few years ago sean and i came up with the idea of family olympics for his side of the family.  we do them either of thanksgiving or christmas, depending on what year we’re all together.  this year we did it at christmas and it was so much fun again! be prepared for a ton of pictures…

first we divided up the teams by age and ability, separating spouses and significant others.  then we chose team names.  our team was the robot unicorns, and the other team was the pirate dragons, i think.  we had a dance that went along with our team name.  we’re super cool like that.

we always begin with the national anthem in the neighborhood park.  we pretty much belt it out.

to avoid injury, of course, david (uncle vito) leads us in stretches,  which include “the karate kid”,

the squatting side stretch,

and “this one”.

then we get the heart pumping with some jumping jacks.

dj was the first competitor in the free throw competition

and he went up against andrew. adn dj won, i think. its all a blur now. i’m getting old… what was i saying?

then came the bowling competition between the little guys – silas up first.

and then he destroyed the pins.  because that’s what he does.  to everything.  speaking of getting old… ugh.

next was cutie patootie isaiah and his mad skills!

tanner competed for the older crowd

then grandma came swooping in with great form.  i think there was mention of a bowling league in her history?

then we switched up last year’s log roll competition and made it a doubles event.  mandy and i almost were able to take tyler and sean, but after 3 babies my bladder isn’t what it used to be and i was laughing so hard and… i had to jump off before i reeeeally embarrassed myself!  and that’s the only reason we lost. for reals.

gracie had been practicing every chance she got for the swing long jump.  she did awesome!

benny was very kind to not do as well ;)

next andrew competed for the older crowd

and totally beat amber.  i’m guessing his extra foot+ in height had a little something to do with it.

after a week of no naps, playing hard all day, and staying up hours past bedtime every night, this little one was pretty attached to my side all day.

then the newly engaged couple played a little game of chubby bunny with marshmallows – shannon was pretty well stuffed, but ronn seemed like he was just chewing a piece of gum!

awwww!

then tanner and benny competed in chubby bunny.  funny thing: lily and gracie used to call benny “bunny”

then the festivities moved indoors and andrew was kind enough to let the littles color in his unfinished tattoos.  at least they’re good for something!

amber and taylor competed in a “bop it off” – taylor smoked amber – sorry amber!

a few more events i didn’t photograph (i was falling asleep) were name that tune and the pie eating contest.

when we are all gathered, we have to take the time for a family pic (just minus one twin)

and for the real pic ;)  wait. david – do you have courtney’s hair as a huge mustache?! funny.

so as you can see, we have an amazing family that loves to have fun.   i am so blessed!

nice, coming up with games for your cheney family! i have cheney family olympic envy…but who are we kidding, your dad would never karate kid stretch. i did come up with (stole) an idea for our christmas next year……(drum roll))…..fruitcake launching!

yes! each family makes a fruitcake launcher. then we have fruitcake launching contest on the beach.
in addition michael has the water-rocket launcher that the kids would get a big kick out of. we could create water rockets that look like a rudolph and try to launch him into flight!

but i do have one request… there MUST be a song, and anthem. “oh fruit cake” to the tune of “oh christmas tree” and/or rudolph the “rednosed reindeer.” (oh, we can let charles lead that one)!

Here in Canada, a woman died, playing Chubby Bunny. I think that she choked to death. That game has the potential to be deadly.

I can totally see how one could choke to death with slimmy marshmellows!!! It gagged me!! And thanks for posting those Linds ;) It was a very special day with our crazy family!! I hope it never ends (but just gets bigger and crazier!!) Love you ~ Shan

    Very fun

  18. 19

The tattoo coloring is so sweet! What a sweet guy to let the kiddos do that!

  19. 20

Oh I’ve been waiting for these pics and they didn’t disappoint! How fun!

  20. 21

You are so cool! I just love you! You always brighten my day when I read your blog (which is daily, of course). You have got to be the cutest person and your life is so fun and exciting. Thanks for brightening my days!

Oh, and I love that mustard bag of yours. I mean, LOVE it! I told my husband about the one you had for sale before Christmas, but someone beat him to it. Stink! Maybe we’ll be faster the next time. :)

  21. 22

That looks like SO much fun! I love it. My husband has a pretty big family on his side. I think I should share this with them and see if we can be as goofy. :) I’m so glad you shared this with us readers. I was wondering what Family Olympics were when you mentioned them before.

  22. 23

FUN! I am jealous of your large family.

  23. 24

    So so funny…I love it!!

  24. 25

That is such a fun idea! I can’t imagine my extended family ever doing something like that but it would surely liven up some gatherings. Actually, I take that back. My mom’s side of the family is “livened up” enough as it is- family olympics would put us over the top! I love that one unfilled tattoo became a human coloring book/paint by numbers. So cute!

  26. 27

Looks like a fantastic time! Your family is so funny!

  27. 28

That’s hilarious!! Funny thing is I just realized I used to go to church with your sis-in-law (I think that’s the relation) Shannon. :) Small world!

  30. 31

Seriously, when are you going to adopt me. My family would NEVER go for that.

  31. 32

How fun! I love your family tradition! Such memories to make and have.

    :)

  32. 33

    oh.my.gosh.

this looks AMAZING!!!! i think i’ll try and convince my family that the olympics are a necessity to our gatherings!

what a fun and entertaining way to spend time with your family!

  33. 34

This is awesome! Good for you guys! :)

  34. 35

I love our crazy family. The national anthem makes me bust out loud laughing every time I look at it. I videoed it and it is hilarious!

Thank you for not posting pictures of the move the gingerbread cookie down your face game.

Michelle- our parents live in Orange County. Lindsey is up on the central coast.

  35. 36

looks like good family fun and that the weather must have been nice!
not to be the downer commenter but chubby bunny is really dangerous. it is a huge choking hazard and with the texture of the marshmallows you can’t hiemlich them out, just FYI especially for little ones!
    happy new year~!

  36. 37

This was so much fun just reading! I can’t even imagine how much fun it was to be there!
