hanging lanterns

i have had these beautiful aqua glass lanterns for a few years now that one of my many sisters-in-law gave me for my birthday, just sitting on a shelf in front of framed pictures, not living out their full potential.  then the 2 ball jars with handles were gifted to me by my sweet friend and i knew i had to put them all together.  midway through this project, because projects take me much longer these days to complete, i was gifted 2 more hanging jars from the sweet ladies at vintage etc.!

i love how these look over the table on the front porch!  i was debating lowering them, but i didn’t want to cut off the view or limit myself on what else i could use as a centerpiece on the table.

the source of my inspiration was a page from a recent martha stewart magazine.  there was this beautiful garden party with hanging jars and lanterns that just looked magical to me!  i’ve always wanted to try out this project as well.

i gathered all my jars and layed them out to look perfectly imperfect.  i started with them all in a straight line, but when i got the last 2 jars i decided to break up the neatness of the look by having a couple offset on each side as well.

we got some eye hooks at home depot, along with the thinnest chain i could find.

then with some pliers we (sean) secured each length of chain to the eye hooks and the lanterns, making sure each lantern was at a different height, but still in the same general area.

this was such a satisfying, quick project!  i also think they would’ve been really pretty lining the porch, hanging above the railings, if i had about 10 more jars!

now i just have to wait another week or so until my hydrangeas are big enough to put a few in the jars…

I have always loved this idea. My husband and I did this for our wedding reception, except they were hung on the inside of a willow tree! Love, love it…looks great!

I love this idea! I love your table too! I think I’ll have to keep my eyes open for some of these and start collecting them. :)

Adorable! I noticed that Cassie said something about keeping her eyes out for jar like these. I look all the time for the old ones. Whenever I see them, the person has them marked way up in price. :( I might just have to make myself some out of new masson jars…. Thanks for the inspiration!

I’ve always loved hanging jars! I’m so not the girl who has planned out her wedding since she was 5, but I do know that my flowers/candles will probably be in hanging glass jars. So cute, and so affordable. Thanks for sharing!

This is absolutely gorgeous! I can’t believe how easy it is to do! If only my house had a front or back porch. lol

  13. 13

Now you’re gonna have a lotta girls with jars hanging from their porch ceilings. haha So cute! : )

  14. 14

I love that look. Makes me wish I had a porch to hang jars from.

  15. 15

So cute! I love this look, but I’m afraid that if I did something similar, my pretty jars would fly from Missouri to Virginia in this crazy wind we’ve been having! Happy Easter!

  16. 16

That looks great! I would love something like that….if I could guarantee no wind!

Your porch looks like it came straight from a magazine. You have a talent :)

A friend of mine gave me the tall aqua one as a random gift. She said that she went to 3 targets on her way home from out of town looking for it.

So pretty! And I am jealous that you have hydrangeas – we have had the worst luck with those flowers, and they are some of my favorites!

I love the way this looks!

These look so good. I loved the photos of your front porch the other day and the lanterns looked so good. I hang candle holders from the sun umbrella in the summer but I love the idea of having these up all the time.

The thing is, I am okay not having a front porch until I see something like this… then I look longingly out my front door and realize I dont have a front porch!! And that if I want one, I would need to move… which is a problem because I am sort of lazy… :)

These look gorgeous! I have a handful of blue ball jars now, thanks to reading The Pleated Poppy! :) I was so proud of my “Martha” inspired centerpiece this weekend at our Easter table, using the jars… But now I could see wrapping them in wire & hanging them above my kitchen sink. Fabulous! Love it, thank you Lindsey!

My goal this spring was to decorate our wrap around porch…I wanted to do something very similar to this. Yours turned out so beautifully. It is fresh & romantic – now to be able to tackle my porch!

  35. 35

so pretty, i want to do this now, i need to make over my porch area, this is perfection!

  36. 36

I have these same lanterns, and also have them sitting on a shelf. I love this look. Wish I didn’t have a ceiling fan over my outdoor table.

  37. 37

I love these, Lindsey! So much that I copied and did a post about them on my blog…linking to you, of course. :)
