art party {part 1 – decorations}

we had gracie’s art party for her 8th birthday last week, and it was! i wanted everything to be really bright and colorful, so we went with all the colors of the rainbow! i also needed to be very economical since we also hired an art teacher for the party, so the decorations were done on the cheap.

it all started with the balloons – i bought a couple packs from target and 1 from walmart – maybe $5 tops for BIG impact!  the strings are simply attached to the ceiling with scotch tape.

and i was so thankful my girls are able to help blow up balloons!

i focused most of my attention on the table since that’s where the girls spent most of their time.

i needed to protect the table since the girls were going to be painting there.  i really wanted to use some fabulous yellow chevron fabric here, but also had no intentions of letting paint get spattered on it.  i found somewhere to use it, but you’ll have to wait to see that later…  so i rolled art paper (from ikea) down each side and taped it under the table lip.  the paper down the middle is wrapping paper from target – maybe a few dollars.

i did a really simple centerpiece.

for the vase i just grabbed our colored pencils we already had on hand and hot glued them to a square glass vase.  the bright flowers were all cut from our yard.  the best part about this is that when the party was over the pencils just popped off the vase and the glue peeled right off.

and just a little art-y touch: our paint brushes plopped in a couple vintage jelly jars.

the whole room – i pulled pillows from the playroom to add brighter pops of color.

lily and i spent a few hours making miles of paper chains.  i bought a pad of bright paper from joann’s (on sale, of course), cut it in 1 inch strips, and we stapled away.

i also arranged our crayons into little mason jars in rainbow colors.

whenever i find inexpensive straws, i grab a pack.  we use straws a lot at our house.  we drink smoothies a few days a week so they are a necessity.  beside, drinking from a straw is way more fun!

even the food was rainbow colored!  i wanted the girls to get a little heathy food before…

the cake.  thanks to jeannett for walking me through this and to meg for the frosting recipe!

did you add up my total for the decorates?  balloons, wrapping paper, and pad of paper = about $15 (if that!).  take that, expensive parties!  oh wait, i still had to pay for food and the art teacher.  nevermind.

stay tuned for the actual party – it was one of my faves.  so fun and the girls were all deeeelightful!

here’s part 2!

Just darling!!! The rainbow food, balloons and table decor are perfect. And I love a good kid’s art party, for my daughter’s 10th birthday I hired a scrapbook pro and we made mini scrapbooks with their school photos (you know the little ones that you get about 50 of when you order the 8×10?) I’ll be your guests loved it!

  28. 28

This reminds me of the parties my mom threw for me when I was little…and the parties I hope to throw for my babes when they get a bit older. Lots of thought, lots of fun, and lots of love & celebration. Woo-woo!

  29. 29

  34. 34

great decorations and the cake looks rainbowlicious!

  35. 35

love all of the decorations. seriously where do people find the room to put all of these fun bowls, platters and plates in their homes. that is my main issue when throwing a party, nothing of mine matches. just made a rainbow cake for our “baby” ~ she turned three. it was a huge hit. not the easiest to make but a sure impact on the table! i need some creative neighbors!

  36. 36

You are just too fun!! WHat a great party! I think my favorite part are the color crayons in the mason jars:) Super fricken cute!

  37. 37

Love the balloons! My oldest just asked for a “gumball” party and I just might have to steal the ballon idea! All the other ideas are great too – so creative!

how fun! love how colorful it is, and love how cheap it was!!! you’re cake is beautiful-bet it was yummy too!

  40. 40

So wish this post would have been earlier. I love you decorating ideas!! My daughter just turned 10. I got a rainbow cake in a jar recipe. She ordered the cake she wanted (I tried to reason with her that although her choice would be pretty it wouldn’t be to her tastes) and then didn’t like it. I later got a “gob/whoopie” pie cake and she loved it. Sometimes they don’t know what they want.

  41. 41

oh, lindsey! i want this party to be my life. love all of the color. and the thought you put into each little touch!

you totally are inspiring me with the square vase! i have an extra one laying around…i may do something with it like you did!

  42. 42

I am so impressed with the idea of hiring an art teacher for a kids party! What a fantastic idea!!!! The decorations and everything are fantastic – can’t wait to read more about the party!

  43. 43

  45. 45

Super cute! I LOVE the balloons.

  46. 46

That is so fantastic! My daughter will be 3 next month and I still haven’t picked a theme for the party. Now that I have seen your ideas, I am thinking CRAYONS! She loves to color and make frame-worthy (in my opinion, anyway) artwork. Thanks so much for the inspiration :)

  47. 47

This is so cute! I love the balloons hanging from the ceiling.

  48. 48

Did you used a scalloped edged pan for the birthday cake?

    • 64

Wow, good eye!! I normally am eagle-eyed, but missed that. I scrolled back up and sure enough, it looks scalloped. May have to do that with my little Tinkerbelle’s first b-day.

  64. 65

So pretty, what a fun Idea… I love your decorating sense, right down to the crayons on the mantel! The rainbow balloon chandelier is my fav, though. My oldest just turned 8, too. We decorated pillowcases for an ‘Almost-SleepOver’… I didn’t get nearly as creative as you, though. :-) Great Job!

  82. 83

I am dying to know how you hung the balloons! They look wonderful and I would love to do something similar for our son’s upcoming bday. But the hubz says only if you can’t tell they were ever attached to the ceiling when it’s over… Thank you!
