chalkboard cabinet doors

i love my kitchen.  there i said it.  its very rarely clean, but when it is, its just pretty.  clean, simple.

but there was one thing missing.  i wanted somewhere in the kitchen to make a grocery list.  yes, its simple enough to just write it down on paper or put it on my phone, but reality is that when i realize we are out of something i won’t walk to my phone or find a pad of paper.  so i decided to jump on the chalkboard bandwagon and possibly ruin my cabinets – yikes!

so i made  a little trip to the ho d’po (home depot) and bought a quart of chalkboard paint.  i gave it a couple coats the had to wait a few days for it to cure.  those few days were painful!  seeing the chalkboard this stark black was shocking!  every time i walked into the kitchen my eyes would jump a little at the new contrast in my kitchen.

we already had a section of chalkboard on the side of our fridge that i never prepped properly.  and we had it tinted brown, and i was never super crazy about that choice, so i repainted it black.

after a few days, i “conditioned” the chalkboard by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk all over the board, made a huge mess, but totally softened the harsh black to a charcoal grey color – yay!

look at it now!  i love it even more!  the softened black is way better, so much less harsh on the eyes.

yes, kahlua is second on my shopping list.  don’t judge ;)  but did you see flaxseed is on the list, too?  totally balances it out.

this board os more for the kids, although i plan on putting our study verses here, too.  this board has already changed 3 times in 3 days!

what a great idea! just curious about the black and white board on the side of your fridge…did you make that? is it a cork board?

  2. 2

Probably best that you commented on the Kahlua before everyone else made comments! The chalkboard works so well against all the white.

  3. 3

    Good to see flax seed up there on the list! :) Make sure you buy flax meal or prepare to grind the flax seed. You have to crack it open to get all its goodness and our chewing doesn’t suffice. Meal is the best, or fresh ground. {And, keep it in the fridge/freezer once open/ground.}

Cute kitchen. I love the globes. I know it’s not the focus of the post, but SERIOUSLY amazing.

  5. 5

Your kitchen is beautiful! I love the chalk boards!

  6. 6

i LOVE having a chalkboard in my kitchen! i love to write notes to my husband when i’m heading out, or to makes reminders when i’m cooking, and we use to write down bible verses too.

i love your kitchen and it may have been the inspiration for my daughter in law, she is now starting a globe collection, I found one for her in Chinese, with a mini globe of the starts attached, for her kitchen too!! Thanks for sharing, Sue

oh i think its adorable! i would totally do it in my kitchen but i have brown cabinets and it wouldn’t have quite the pop that yours does again white cabinets!

  10. 10

Love it! So cute that you drew pictures of what could be in your cabinets. I think that looks great!

Would you be interested in linking this up to my new “Encouraging Words” link-up? It’s all about writing something encouraging/inspiring/funny around our houses for our families. This would be perfect!

The first one is a few posts down on http://www.OrdinarySarah.com :)

I love your kitchen too! Because we are renters, I turned a framed piece of “artwork” I didn’t want anymore into a chalkboard. Hope it fits in the San Diego place.

  13. 13

Very cute and functional. I wish I could talk my hubby into letting me do this!

  14. 14

Absolutely love it! One problem, do you take the door cabinet with you on the shopping trip?

Then need to invent SmartBoard paint – then anything you write on it, you just press a button and it will print it out! Voila!

  15. 15

I love Kahlua! Your cabinets look great. One of my goals this fall is to get a chalkboard up in our kitchen for Scripture.

  16. 16

It looks great!! Such a cute idea!

  17. 17

Love it! It turned out great! (And have I said before I just love your house?!) I totally believe you can NOT go wrong, in any way, with chalkboard paint! Someday, I want an entire wall and a half in my kitchen done with chalkboard paint.

  18. 18

I have my pantry painted with chalkboard paint and I LOVE it. :) So fun!

  19. 19

Love the chalk board! Love the Kahlua! :)

  20. 20

Love it! We’ve had the top panel of a door in our kitchen as a chalk board for about 5 years and I just adore it. We keep emergency contact info written at the very top for easy reference for babysitters (it is close to the phone, too). And I love using it to write out a menu when we have friends over.

    Enjoy!

  21. 21

That is gorgeous!!! You already had a beautiful and interesting (re: globes, I love them!) but now it is even more so of both. Some of the scariest projects turn out to be the best!!! Right?

  22. 22

Did you know there are also chalk board markers? Less dust AND it’s going to stay there until you rub it off … less unintentional smearing. I’ve never seen them in stores but you can find them via Amazon.

  23. 23

This is awesome. So is the bulletin board in the last pic.

  24. 24

cute! i did this to my brother’s cupboards when he moved into a little house for college. i would venture to say THOSE boys weren’t writing they’re shopping list on them though :)

  25. 25

very cute! I love chalkboards and being able to paint it anywhere is the best. I dream of an all white kitchen like yours :)

  26. 26

    This looks GREAT!

And I am definitely cracking up on Kahlua being #2 on your list….it’s #1 on mine….along with Vanilla Ice Cream. :) Time to restock :)

    YUM!

  27. 27

Love it! Just last night we painted our back door (in the kitchen) and our coffee table w/chalkboard paint. Can’t wait to use them. You DO have a gorgeous kitchen!

  28. 28

So cute! I wanted you to know that my husband and I are embarking on a kitchen re-do and I’m using a lot of elements from yours as inspiration. :)

  29. 29

    linds – i just love you. you’re amazing! :]

  30. 30

You are so brave!!!! Great idea.

  31. 31

  32. 32

For sure, no judging! Love it! I also love the additional spot for kids and Bible verses! Now where can I incorporate that in my kitchen…

  34. 34

love this idea and adore the fact that kalhua is the second thing on your list :)

  35. 35

Lovee love love it all. I’ve been toying with this also for bible verses and spelling words! Miss you!

  36. 36

LOVE this! Now I totally want to do it in my kitchen. Very cute and practical.

  37. 37

I would have never bat an eye at the Kahlua. Makes me feel like I may know you a tad better.

  38. 38

Oh, your kitchen is gorgeous!!!! I am planning a kitchen redo (just paint and tile). I had planned on using some gray on our walls…did I see a littlegray on yours? Cheers~Beth

  39. 39

love chalk board paint…looks good! nice touch!

  40. 40

I did almost the same to some of our cupboards. Only one set of cupboards had glass inserts in them and I didn’t like how mismatched they looked. I went to Michaels and got big rolls of chalkboard stickers (That’s just what I call it, kind of like contact paper). They also have dry erase rolls too!

  41. 41

I LOVE IT! I saw this idea first on that disney show Good Luck Charlie. The fridge doors are all chalkboard and it looks so cool. And then the family I just started working for painted a huge board with the chalkboard paint and put it up in their playroom.

When I finally buy my first house I am definitely doing this :)

  42. 42

Now that is genius!!! My daughters room used to have a chalkboard wall but I had never thought about doing chalkboard cabinets in the kitchen. That would be so perfect to just jot down notes and such. I’m pinning this! I think I might have to give this a try when I start working on my kitchen redo!

  43. 43

wow. That is so smart! I am definitely going to try this out soon!!

  44. 44

LOVE it! Looks GREAT! I just did chalkboard paint on my fridge…stop by and check it out http://objectofmayaffection.blogspot.com

  45. 45

such a cool idea i’m filing away for another day when I have a house of my own. :)

  46. 46

I found your blog though a linky party today and just had to tell you that I ADORE your kitchen! I’m hoping to find more posts about it. Cute chalkboards too!

  47. 47

    LOVE it.
pinned it to my pinterest kitchen board!!!!

not judging you AT ALL for the 2nd item on your grocery list.

kind of makes me love you more.

  48. 48

We just put up a vinyl chalkboard calendar on our kitchen wall and just LOVE it. You should try chalk markers (I bought mine on Amazon). They still write and erase just like chalk, but they are so concentrated, it’s WAY easier to write (especially if you’re making a big list). Enjoy–your kitchen looks great!

  49. 49

I’m totally not judging the Kahlua….I just made a shopping list for Costco and their pre-made Margarita wonder juice (just totally made up that title) was first on my list. Yay for adult beverages :)

  50. 50

totally not judging on the kahlua, i mean, that’s just a staple. it’s like bread and water, a must have!

and, i also love your kitchen. there, i said it! :)
