quick dress revamp

last christmas i bought this beautiful dress from ruby rose.  i absolutely love it!  but, even though it fit perfectly, there were a couple things that were stopping me from wearing it.  first, it was too low cut.  second, i couldn’t land on a pair of shoes to wear with it.  i needed something strappy and nude or pale gold (since there is a tiny bit of metallic strands in the lace.  any shoes i tried just didn’t work.  third, the beautiful pale robin’s egg blue ribbon around the bust line was so pretty, but the long ribbons hanging down the back evoked a bit of a bride’s maid feel.

the solutions:

1st – i added a piece of fabric across the plunging neckline.  i do feel like it took away a lot of the “sexy” from the dress, but i just couldn’t wear it that way.

2nd – i took off the pale blue ribbon, and added a soft brown one, matte side up.

and that solved my 3rd problem – having the brown now allowed me to wear a pair of shoes i already have!  it made the dress slightly more casual, which worked for the shoes i had!

some wedges i got from old navy a couple summers ago.

i love it when i can make something work!  have you done any revamping lately?

    this turned out DARLING!

I LOVE your revamp. Yes, the light blue was too bridesmaid–& girlish. The new brown ribbon adds a wonderful sophistication to it, but the dress stays soft. Plus you added the sweater & lovely corsage.
Also, I applaud the addition of the less-clevage fabric. Sexy is how you feel in a dress, not just the dress. I have a few plunging necklines & I’m always “checking”& therefore rarely wear.
    Bonus, great strappy heels. :-)

Absolutely love it! And I wish my toes looked that good!

    I have a wedding to go to this weekend and am feeling as if I have NOTHING to wear. You have inspired me to “hunt” around in my closet to see what I could come up with. We’ll see how it goes… (c;

Nice job!! I love that you had the vision to do that revamp. This is why I need to keep reading blogs and get inspired!

That’s great, it added so much with so little!

very pretty – I love when I find a way to make something in my closet work in a new way.

LOve that look. It all goes so nicely together. With the little cardigan…. oh my, love!

It’s very pretty Melissa. You did a great job with the changes! I love the entire outfit together–sweater, dress, corsage and shoes!

I will make it around to WIWW sometime. You are a SAHM fashion inspiration!

    So pretty!

LOVE IT!!!! You did an awesome job. I just turned a shirt into a skirt for my baby and also sewed polka dot ruffles on a very “tired” and dingy shirt for one of my girls. It’s so much fun to get more life out of old clothes!

You momified the neckline – good job. It turned out looking really great!

I absolutely love your revamp. I laways wear a cami under anything with a low neck line. I think leaving something to the imagination is sexier than showing it off! I love the cardigan and corsage! I’m a cami, cardi girl ;)

I revamped a throw with a beautiful fringe to curtains for my bedroom and that was exciting and I still love them after a couple of yrs.

Keep up the good work and have a great day!

Love the revamp! That dress is absolutely gorgeous! Love the sweater you paired with it as well.

  15. 15

wow that dress is so pretty!

  16. 16

that turned out great! wonderful job!!!

I LOVE THIS! The brown ribbon is PERFECT and completely changes the dress, in my opinion. It grounds the dress a bit. Fantastic job! It looks awesome on you!!

Lindsey, that dress is so pretty! And, so pretty revamped! I hear ya with the low cut front. I can’t do it either. When I try, I’m so self conscious. I’d try it with cowboy boots too for a fall fun dress.

  19. 19

    much, MUCH, better!

  20. 20

Why do you have to be so freaking cute! You make me sick! lol just kidding, but really!

  21. 21

I love your revamp- and the fabric across the neckline is perfect- so many cute dresses have that neckline- and it just doesn’t work for most women—I’m probably going to copy your ideas!

    ;)

I LOVE it!! The lace pattern is so beautiful that with any changes you could have done it would have still been gorgeous. But I really love what you did with it!

  23. 23

This is great! I have struggled with low cut stuff because of not being able to fill it in if you know what I mean (no boobs). I’m glad you shared just how many issues you had to overcome to make this the perfect dress for YOU! Now I’m going up to look in my closet at all my pretty dresses I never feel like wearing, to try and make them comfortable for me. Thanks for sharing the details!

  24. 24

So cute!! I love the dress and it looks beautiful on you. I love the revamp. I’m always worried about that kind of stuff too.

  25. 25

i like the dress before but i LOVE the dress after you revamped it! great job, linds :)

  26. 26

The best way to wear a dress like that is to make it comfortable, and you did that fabulously! Plus, who could pass down an opportunity to wear fabulous wedges?? Gorgeous!

  27. 27

    One of my faves!

  28. 28

SO cute – I really love it with the matte brown!

  29. 29

I am pretty sure I need to have this dress. Um, yes I do! great revamp! you look beautiful :)

  30. 30

Personally I think the dress looks much better the way you revamped it. You look gorgeous. Nope the only revamping I have done has involved stuff around the house…like curtains and framing some really cute fabric.

  31. 31

    Cute, cute, cute!

  32. 32

WOW…You did an awesome job. LOVE how you made this dress more YOU! The brown sash is perfect to help you dress the dress UP or down.

  33. 33

    gorgeous.
    love the new ribbon.
    :)
