i’m a bake sale faker {& a how-to!}

i am not an experienced baker.  i am making strides lately, but still lacking experience.

even so, i volunteered for the school bake sale last week (because the girls begged me to!).

so we decided to bake brownie cupcakes, banana bread, and stadium bars.

i got the recipe for the stadium bars from the back of the brownie package (i buy the big box from costco).

i didn’t measure for the topping, just fudged a bit:  pour prepared brownie mix into pan, add popcorn (supposed to be caramel corn, so i added caramel syrup), chopped peanuts, and chocolate chips.  i also added white chocolate chips.  looks good right?  well…

tip #1:  don’t bake too many things at one time and forget to check on some of them!

this looked so good from the top and then i saw the blackened bottom – yikes!

not wanting to waste, i carefully sliced off the bottom and the burnt sides and we were good to go!  hopefully nobody tasted any bits of burnt pieces!

the brownies i did not burn (or the banana bread – yay!).  not only do the cupcake wrappers hep make them cuter, but so do the flags!

they are super easy, so if you aren’t crafty at all, here are some simple directions.

step 1:  grab a super cute assistant.

step 2:  sort through scrap paper and cut into strips.  don’t measure, just chop, approximately 1 1/2 ” x 6″.

step 3:  fold the strip in half and trim up edges.

step 4:  cut out the triangle to make the points in the flag.

step 5:  add hot glue (or elmer’s glue – you’ll just have to wait longer for it to dry), dab some at the fold and a little squiggle in the middle.  then add the toothpick, and close the sides together!

step 6:  insert flag into cupcake and enjoy the cuteness!

even if your baked goods taste like cr*p, they’ll still look adorable!

    The flags are over the top!! My bake sale experience has always been the better packaged items ALWAYS get bought up first. Good call on your part!

    girl. i will bake things for the bake sale (don’t mean to toot my own horn but i can bake) if you would make them look pretty.

    Did you know you can substitute pureed black beans for the eggs, oil and water when making boxed brownies? Just rinse the beans, put em back in the can and fill with water. Dump it in your blender and puree. Then add to your brownie mix and bake according to directions. WAY heathier and I promise they taste great.

    Absolutely love it! I’ve done it with biscuits and cinnamon rolls…the kids never know, lol!
