i’ve had the pleasure to do a few decorating jobs for our school over the summer, and this globe was one of them.

we focus so much on world history that globes are just a natural item to decorate with.

while this globe is beautiful, it just was kind of blah for the school, with the tan color for the oceans and lakes.  but i noticed how pretty the colors of the land masses were and decided to just focus on them by repainting the water.  i though first about painting them turquoise, but then quickly landed on chalkboard paint for the project.  thankfully, i still had some left from previous projects.  the globe was only $3 so this was a cheap fix!

 this took me about an hour and a half, start to finish.  i used a few different sized brushes – big for the open seas, smaller for the land borders, tiny for the lakes.

 as you can see, its not perfect.  i did 2 coats along the edges and 3 coats in the bigger open areas.  the paint dries really quickly so i was able to go over an area just a few minutes after each coat.  and my mistakes aren’t very noticeable – i painted over a chunk of iceland accidentally, but unless you know the land well, you’d never know!  and some of the tiny islands… well, they just don’t exist on my globe!

i haven’t decided if i want to actually use the chalk board aspect of this and write something on the globe – i kind of just love the matte black against the pretty colors!

since this one has already found a home at school, i may take the similar one from silas’ room and do it again!
