around town: port san luis

port san luis

we live just 10 minutes or so from avila beach and port san luis.  not sure if you’ve heard, but just recently we had a crazy amount of press here because of a pod of whales that were feeding in this area for a couple weeks!  one day we decided to join the masses and try to spot the whales.

we packed up our lunches and sat at the top of a bluff with our niece (who’s living with us short-term – loving it!).

port san luis

while we were watching, and watching, and watching, we also saw a handful of seals and a pair of dolphins!

port san luis

and while i didn’t see any whales (and the lady next to me saw a number of them!), i did see a little bit of spray.  don’t you see it?  no?  its so obvious!

port san luis

 see?  its right there ;)

port san luis

we gave up whales spotting from the bluff and moved over to the pier.  no better.

port san luis

but we got a nice close look at the sea lions and seals!

port san luis

the water is nice and shallow and clear next to the beginning of the pier.

port san luis

the pelicans lurk near the fishermen cleaning their caught fish.

port san luis

toward the ned of the pier is a restaurant  and the fish market.

port san luis

and then another viewing area out at the very end of the pier.  still no whales.  boo.

port san luis

a month or so ago, we went to the beach area at port san luis.  we love this beach!  we tend to go to avila beach down the road more often, but this beach is usually quieter and we can have bonfires there.  its also a dog friendly beach, with pros and cons.  its a pro if you are a dog lover, a con if you’re like me and get grossed out seeing a dog pee on your kids’ sand castle.  yuck.

port san luis

while its cools off quite a bit as the sun is setting, thing one and thing two thought it was still plenty warm to go for an evening swim.  nuts.  look out for whales!

I LOVE Avila. I l ive in Bakersfield. We had a trailer parked in a trailer park on Morro Bay embarcadero when I was growing up. It was kittycorner(sp?) from the Aquarium. We love that whole area. I know that most of my friends from here in Bako like to go to Pismo. meh. Not interested personally. How lucky for you to live there! I just stayed at Cambria Pines Lodge 2 weeks ago with my sisters. Spent the afternoons shopping and at Moonstone Beach searching for moonstones. The whales were there that weekend, but we forgot to look because our eyes were pouring over all the beautiful stones. We could have just kicked ourselves while driving home and realizing that we hadn’t looked for the whales!!! It was a BEAUTIFUL weekend though. PERFECT weather. Fresh fish & chowder at the Shell Shack. YUM.

Lucky you to live by the ocean… we get to go maybe once a year… but the mountains I live by are pretty wonderful too.

We went out there four different times to try to see whales and I saw about as much action as you did! I guess we were going at the wrong time because I saw some amazing pictures that people took of the whales… So they were out there!

oh I love visiting your blog and getting glimpses of the California coast! It looks like you guys had fun even though only a spout was seen! My husband and I were in Monterey a few years back and had the most AWESOME whale watching experience! I’d LOVE for my kids to catch a sight of those giants too.

We were there too a few weeks ago. We drove out to Port to get fish for dinner and got caught in traffic. We had no idea what was happening! :) We just saw the back of a few whales. We love Avila. It is one of our favorite places to visit…and it helps we have a free place to stay. :) My grandpa and dad both grew up there. It is a lovely place…with the excpetion of the nuclear power plant. Love reading your blog!

I took my vintage trailer up to Port San Luis and we loved the old fashioned feel there. I love the Central Coast!
