reclaimed wood coffee table {& a little rearranging!}

reclaimed wood coffee table

after coming home from craft weekend, i was so inspired to get moving on some projects i’ve been hesitant to start.

and after christmas, it was time to rearrange my living room furniture to take place of the missing tree, so one project lead happily to another.

 i was ready to rearrange my living room furniture, but the empty space in front of the windows was hard to fill.

 this vintage baby crib has been in our home for about 5 years, moving from the playroom to the front porch, to the back yard.

the spacing is a little tricky in my living room, with the front door opening right into it.  that and the fact that the playroom is right off the living room, and i have to have an open walkway to it.

the crib is the perfect size to fit the space – it can be centered in front of the windows and still leave room for a path across the room.  and with 2 large couches, a smaller piece of furniture was necessary to balance things out.

we also got a new rug.  we had a great jute rug that held up really well, but finally started to ravel apart after about 5 years.  i really wanted to get a rug from this site during their black friday sale, but i could not decide on a pattern!  i think a chevron or herringbone would look great, but i know that i would tire of it.   since  big ticket purchases aren’t something i make easily or often, i knew we needed something more neutral and classic.

this rug is from costco and was a great deal!  its about 8’x10′ and was just under $200.  it is really soft and plush (the kids love rolling around on it!).

but with this great expanse of floor, our other options for coffee tables seemed too dinky.  my parents were in town and my dad is always up for a good project so i asked him to help me make a big ol’ coffee table.  he said yes ;)

 we have a great local source for free weathered wood, and we’ve been stashing away wood for projects.  my mom also found these casters at a garage sale awhile back for me.  yes, my parents are awesome!

all of the wood was reclaimed, my favorite being the green painted skirt under the table top – that wood came all the way from my parents’ house, salvaged when their siding was replaced.

 somehow, despite making measurements, our first attempt at the coffee table was, well, huge.  like dance floor huge.

so we took a break, and then started over.  well, we took it apart a bit then cut it down, and put it back together.

 i love the final product!

i still need to sand it down a bit and slap a clear coat on it, but i’ll get to that eventually.

 we also built the table to a finished height of 20″, where the standard is closer to 16″.  the kids work at the coffee table a lot and their knees always bonk into it, so i raised the surface height a bit so its a better work surface.

 i love that this table will be able to serve a variety of functions and will work when i rearrange the furniture again, ’cause you know i will!

the best part of it all, besides spending a couple days of quality time with my dad?  the table was free.  yep.  F.R.E.E.
