I kind of have a thing for yarn crafts. Not so much for knitting it
crocheting, just crafting. Pom poms are my go-to yarn craft as they
can be used in a million ways.
But this time, I wanted to go BIG! I had been eyeing this blanket
from ikea for awhile for my master bedroom, but once I got it I knew
it had to be out in the open for everyone to enjoy!
While I loved the blanket as is, I had been wanting to do a craft with
giant pompoms, either a pillow or blanket. I found this pretty yarn at
Walmart (I think?) and saved it for a rainy day. Well, it never rained
;) so I tackled this project on a day I had 7 kids at my house. All
that to say, this is a really easy project.
Have you ever made a pompom? It’s super easy. We actually have a set
of “pompom makers” in a variety of sizes but it’s just as easy to make
one without any special tool.
I knew I wanted gigantic poms so I decided to use a calculator as my
base. You can wrap yarn around just about anything to make a pompom.
I wrapped the yarn around the calculator top to bottom approximately
900 times (give or take a few hundred) until it was pretty puffy. Then
I carefully slid the loops of yarn from around the calculator and tied
a 1ft length of yarn around the center of those loops, making what
looked like a big puffy bow. Then I snipped the loops on both sides,
making a poofy pompom! It was a little wonky so I kept trimming until
it was nice a round-ish.
I made 8 poms for my blanket. I attached them to each corner and
spaced evenly along the sides with a thread and needle. I tied it
really securely, making sure to go through the very center of each
pompom several times.
Now I don’t know exactly how well this will wash or how long the poms
will stay intact, but for now I’m loving it! I may go back into each
pompom with more thread and just make sure they are tied really well
so they don’t slowly fall apart!
(allison is currently on a break but you can message her for info on the pillow – it is an 18″ x 18″ small triangle, multi-colored pillow cover. let her know i sent you!)
