master bedroom refresh!

master bedroom update at the pleated poppy

2 things i found surprising about myself: 1) this is the first time i’ve painted our master bedroom since we built the house 8 years ago.  thats a long time for a girl who likes change!  and 2) this is the first time i have ever painted a room white.  like ever.

so what do i think?  i love it!  it is definitely taking some getting used to – i mean, its bright!  i can lay in bed at night with all the lights off and it still seems bright.  the color is called “crisp linen white” by glidden, but i had it mixed into behr marquee paint.  i wanted a warmer white.  if i didn’t go warm, i would’ve gone white with a touch of grey.

the color we had before was flax, by restoration hardware (mixed at home depot into a less expensive paint).  i still love that color, but it was time for a change.  besides, this room doesn’t get a ton of natural light so it tended to stay darkish.  that is, until we painted it white and now it sure looks like we get A LOT of natural light in there!

i’m big into shopping the house rather than buying all new for a room change.  there’s a couple of reasons for that.  one, i like to change my mind a lot and i would spend a lot of money if i bought all new each time.  and two, i like the look of a room that looks like it evolved over time rather than was styled with all store bought purchases.  for this room change, i think i only bought 4 new items, a couple pillows and 2 new frames.

this dresser was a hand-me-down from a friend, and i love it!   i am thinking about sanding down the top for more wood showing.  and maybe the drawers?

i bought these lamps at target years ago and then swapped out the lampshades sometime in the last year.

this metal suitcase was a find – vintage or thrift or garage sale…?  right now it holds nothing but i love it so there it sits!  the lucite purse was my grams and it holds some of her goodies inside, a hand held fan, a decorative hair comb, some teeny tiny dressy gloves – this stuff is too pretty to have packed away.  the milk glass vase holds a tube of fancy hand lotion, a pen or 2, and phone/ipad cords and earbuds – i love having these things on hand when i sit in bed (where i’m typing right now).

i just moved this big ol’ rug from the living room into here.  its almost too big, but i really like it (from coscto).

years ago, like 14 years ago, i went to a garage sale where a painter was selling all her unused frames that she had bought to frame her artwork.  gorgeous elaborate frames for, get this, a dollar each!  needless to say, i bought them all.  i gave lots away but have painted and repainted the ones i kept over and over.  the fancy one in the center of our bed is one of those.

i taped a little bakers twine to the back of the frame and clipped a small selection of out photo booth pictures there.

these wood frames are 2 of the new items i just purchased for this room.  they were from target and on clearance for $5.08!  i think it would’ve been wrong to not buy them, don’t you?  a little gold and white wrapping paper made a nice mat for a couple of my favorite instagram pictures of sean and i.

sean travels a lot for work, but when he’s home he works out of the house in this little corner of our room.  the desk was built by his local company OneSource.  and full disclosure, i scooped up an armload of his desk mess before i took this picture.

this beautifully textured pillow was another one of my new purchases for the room, from target.  i actually bought it for my living room but love it in here too.  i don’t expect my pillows to stay too long in one place, so it will probably migrate throughout the house soon.  the sheets are my favorite, from target also.  the coverlet was from our wedding.  the euro shams peeking out from behind were from tuesday morning.

we bought this bed from pottery barn, one of our few “new” purchases in the furniture department.  it was unbelievably/accidentally mismarked in its price in the catalog and we were sure to jump on it before they corrected the error.  i am toying with the idea of selling it.  or painting it.  i have never loved the finish – i was hoping for a wrought iron look rather than this pewter finish.   the folded bedspread is a pretty pin tucked one from target a few years ago, and that pretty knit blanket was a wedding gift made by my gram.

yes, my jewelry takes up quite a bit of real estate in my room, but its just so pretty!

some of my glitzier pieces have made it to the antlers.

and after several different versions of earring, ring, and bracelet storage, this is my favorite.

this thrifted tackle box has also moonlighted as a cash box for past stitch markets, but this is its home for good.

on either side of my dresser are these cabinets we found at the rose bowl flea market.  the seller had ripped them out of a home that was being torn down.  i love the layers of paint and the chippiness.

that’s my favorite piece in the room ;)  when sean gets tired of sitting at his desk, he gets some back relief using the tall dresser as a standing desk.

this wall is a bit of a work in progress, but i really like it.

my bedside table books have migrated to the foot of my bed, alongside routers and modems and whatever those things are that blink lights at me all night long. #lightsleeper

sean calls this “grandma’s corner because of the chair and the floral painting above it.  i get it, but imagine that chair in a grey linen!   at least thats what i’ve been doing for the past 6 years.  thankfully, when mama’s happy, sean is happy.  aka he doesn’t really care all that much and knows i do.  the curtains were  from target.

that adorable print is from barn owl primitives.  kristi is always awesome and sent me a coupon code just for you!  use code POPPY5 for $5 off any art print  from now until saturday, march 7th.

i’m sure some people could do great things with this chair, but the coral/pink/mauve thing just doesn’t work in here, and i’m tired of covering it with random table cloths.  i figured if i exposed its true color then maybe i’d be more inclined to actually recover it.  we shall see…

and that pillow is my last new purchase for the room, from world market.

i was the genius who wanted to save square footage and designed a house without hallways.  which means that you can see my room from the front door, the loving room, the kitchen, and the dining room.  awesome.  so i try to make my bed everyday.  sometimes.

just one more before and after for you.

Gorgeous room. I, also, am on the mood of changing my room a little bit.

So pretty and there are so many little details that I want to copy (if you don’t mind). The wrapping paper for framed picture wrapping was a great idea, but I especially like how the jewelry display in the frame and tackle box. Everything about that side of the room with the tall dresser and all of the frames and the jewelry looks so nice. Beautiful details.

Love it!! Wanting changes myself.. Light, airy, fresh!!! Love the white! Big challenge for me is not a lot of room, small master with horrible closet space. Jewelry big problem! Looking for solutions. Wish I could pop you to Chicago (which I would not do to youth is time of year 😊) to look at space a give ideas. Good work!

LOVE the neutral theme you have going on! White is always a good alternative because it gives you so many possibilities… great idea with the frames ~ going to see what I can come up with. Think I have a similar antique frame that is waiting for me to give it some attention : )

You are now ready for spring !

Hi! I’m new here (love your bedroom!). What intrigued me on this post was the house plan with no hallways. My husband designed ours when we built five years ago without hallways. I love it bc like you said- no wasted floor space. But I also struggle to keep “the flow” and with being able to see EVERYTHING! Do you have any more house posts that shows yours and how you make it all work?!

It is beautiful! I am totally stealing your idea for tackle box/jewelry holder. My husband has a beautiful green one and I’ve been wondering how to put it to use. Thanks!

Charming old tackle box for jewelry = genius. And I love the bedside dresser and suitcase combo. I need something to hide things in and that is such a beautiful way to do it!

I liked the room before, but then you really stepped it up a few notches and I like it even more now!

It’s gorgeous! Funny enough – I just posted my own white wall transformation in our master bedroom yesterday. Great minds… ;) You’ve got such beautiful detail going on in yours!

I am in Love with the dresser that you hot from a friend, next to your bed! I had to manually close my mouth and wipe the drool off my iPad! I wouldn’t change a thing about it. It looks white washed. But, you’ve probly grown used to its look and crave a change, so I’d like to vote for you to sand the top down and stain it to see its original wood. I bet it’s gorgeous;)

    1) LOVING THE WHITE. Love.
    2) I don’t think the rug is too big.
    3) If you decide to sell the bed, you will give me first dibs. Zero percent joking.
