Casual Fridays

I love Fridays!  Even thought its a homeschool day for us, its generally a lighter load and so close to the weekend that it almost feels weekendish.  I’m less stressed knowing that relaxation (or fun) (or both!) are coming soon!  So these posts are filled with random, not super important, Friday-esque details: lighter topic, no stress, things that I find funny, and I hope you do, too!

I’m on the hunt for a new pair of athletic shoes, but not for actually being athletic in!  I have a pair of shoes I work out in now, and want to just have another fun pair for wearing around.  I love New Balance, their fun colors, and retro vibe, but I can’t decide which pair I like best!  Will you weigh in for me?  I’m open to other colors, too, but these were the first ones I found.

Actually, while I was working on this post, I found a really cute pair of sneakers that I’m going to try for a fraction of the price, from Target!  They haven’t arrived yet, but I sure hope they fit right!

Also, I swear I wear things that are colors other than pink!

One of the perks of having older kids is introducing them to things that Sean & I find hilarious, but when they are little just wouldn’t make sense.  Around here, we’re big fans of stupid humor! Like The Three Amigos.  Also, random videos, like the SNL skit on Beyonce’s Single Ladies video, featuring Justin Timberlake.  I think this video is hilarious!  My 12 year old, Lily, got a letter board for Christmas and quoted the best lines from the skit on it (above).

On the topic of movies and videos for older kids, I would love some suggestions from you guys!  We generally go pretty clean with our movies, but are relaxing a bit with language for our oldest.  If there’s any sexual material, we either skip it or pass on the movie or show entirely.  Abbie from M is for Mama gave me a bunch of recommendations recently, but I’d love more!  My girls and I recently watched You’ve Got Mail (per Abbie’s suggestion) and they loved it and it was so clean!  As a family, we have been watching the old reruns of Tool Time.  While Tim makes some slightly more adult remarks, they are generally above the kids’ understanding, and we all enjoy watching it.  A friend recommended a short series recently called Dr. Thorne (its free with Amazon Prime!) and our whole family enjoyed it, even our 10 year old son.  So what about you – do you have any good clean shows you can suggest?

Any weekend plans?  We have a 4 day weekend (woohooo!) with very few plans – my favorite!  I always have several projects running at once, so maybe I’ll get to finish one of them…

What I Wore: Stitch Fix Edition

stitch fix

Have you ever tried Stitch Fix?  I have been using their service for years.  In fact, I just received my 36th fix!

If you’re not familiar with Stitch Fix, its an online styling service, where you fill out all sorts of information about yourself and your clothing styles and preferences, sizes and budget, and a stylist curates a box of 5 items for you.  You get a box in the mail of 5 items (clothing, jewelry and shoes if you like), try them all on, and return whatever you don’t want.

A few confessions: I love to shop, so this service doesn’t really meet a need of mine to have someone help me figure out what looks good on my body.  If you are the type that hates shopping, or never knows how to attain the style you want, then this is an awesome service!  But that said, many of my most worn, very favorite items in my closet came from Stitch Fix.  Even though I don’t feel like I need someone to shop for me, its still fun opening up a box full of new clothes and seeing what will work.

Also, there are times when I send the whole box back, or just keep one item.  Sometimes its just a big miss.  What is helpful is I give details to my stylist as to exactly what I didn’t like about the items, and what I’d like different the next fix.

And I just got my first box after taking a very long break.  I was hesitant to start again, but my new stylist nailed it!  I only ended up keeping one item, but I’ll explain more as to why I was still very happy with the overall box.

Each of the items were great, but just not perfect.  I have decided with this service that I will only keep the items I really love.  You can choose your budget for all the items in your fix, and I have set mine a little higher.  Because of this, I am spending more on each item than I normally would, so I really want to love it and know I will get a lot of wear out of it.

A quick tip for you: when you get your box, have some basic items on hand to try things on with.  I chose jeans, a white t-shirt, and white converse.

The first thing I tried on were these lace up flats (Lucky Brand – Aviee lace up flats).

They fit perfectly and were comfortable.  I have flat feet so there was a little gaping above the toes, but overall a good fit.  The style was cute with the lace up detailing and the elastic straps weren’t annoying at all.  But… I just didn’t love them . the color is a great neutral, but I think I would’ve preferred this style in black.  Also, I feel like this ghillie (lace up) style is a trend from the last couple years.  I am not normally one to jump on a trend for awhile (I used to think skinny jeans were hideous!), but I felt like there would be other flats I would love more.  So these went back.

Next up was the Jana Poncho Pullover by RD Style.  Now I am always a fan of chunky sweaters!  This one had a lot going for it, but a few marks against.  I will say that this was an 80* day that I tried this all on, so that didn’t help things!

I love the cowl neck, the ribbing, the charcoal grey color and the length, but it was a little too boxy for me when my arms weren’t at my side.

stitch fix

I didn’t love that the side split all the way to the sleeves.  Yes, it was technically a poncho, so that is to be expected, but I couldn’t decide if I liked the creativity of it or if it just felt off.  So it was returned as well.

I was giddy when I opened my box and saw this sweatshirt.   Its the Club Nomade Hoodie by Scotch & Soda.

My stylist had clearly looked at my personal style online and on my Pinterest board (I gave Stitch Fix my What I Wore Pinterest board so my stylist knows what to look for).  I love this pale pink, almost peachy color.  The style is great – casual but still nice.  It has a fun cut, wider than I’d normally pick, but still cute.

But here’s what made me return even this beauty: the short sleeves.  Ok, not technically short sleeves, maybe 3/4 length.  I really really loved this sweatshirt, but knew I’d be super annoyed when I couldn’t pull the sleeves all the way down to keep me warm (I have this thing with being warm).  Everything else about it was so good!  Also, this was the priciest item in my box, so I would’ve only kept it if it were much less expensive.

Next up is the Angelo Cargo Anorak Jacket by 41 Hawthorne.  I have been wanting a blush pink field jacket, and this one fit the bill perfectly!

stitch fix

I have another lightweight field jacket in the perfect olive green that was from Stitch Fix as well.  This jacket is lined and feels like a quality piece of clothing.

stitch fix

It fits perfectly!  I love the option of wearing it with or without the hood (it zips off).

stitch fix

The color is great – not too bright or fleshy.  I have found others that are similar, but the pink just wasn’t quite right.  This one was a definite keeper!  It will be great in the spring over a t-shirt or even now layered over a sweater.

stitch fix

When I opened the box, my daughters were both with me.  As soon as these pants came out (Dustin Ankle Zip Detail Jogger Pant by Pistola), we all kind of said, “ugh”, and I had very little hope for them.  I didn’t love the twill fabric for pants with elasticized ankles.  They looked like pants for little boys.

But this is one of the reasons why I really like Stitch Fix!  When I tried them on, I actually thought they were a lot cuter than I was expecting!  I love joggers and a variation other than sweats would be nice!  Stitch Fix will send me things I wouldn’t normally choose for myself, which is kind of fun!

stitch fix

But these ones were gigantic.  In the first picture I am holding a wad of fabric behind my back.  They were just huge.  Stitch fix does offer an exchange for a different size option, but I knew that these wouldn’t get as much wear as they should, considering their price.

stitch fix

So these, too, went back.

After all that, keeping only the pink jacket, I was still totally pleased with the fix.  Each of the items were very close to what I’d love to keep, but just not quite there.  I was sure to give details to my stylist when I returned them, so she knew how to tweak my next fix.

Have you tried Stitch Fix before?  If not you can try it risk free with this link.  Normally, you pay a $20 stylist fee with each fix, which is applied toward anything you buy in your fix.  And full disclosure, I get a $25 credit when you order your first box, and you can too when anyone uses your unique code to try it out as well!

Let me know if you have any questions!
