Exterior Siding: Horizontal or Vertical

You were all so helpful (and all in complete agreement!) with my last post about our future house.  I agree, the slanted porch roof is the way to go, and it is currently getting redesigned!  Just a clarification, the porch roof would have had a slight slant to it to run the water off, but not much at all.  Also, in the part of the country we really don’t get much rain at all, so it just wasn’t a concern to me.

So now I have another question for you, and I’m quite sure you will have answers!

I was certain (CERTAIN!) I knew what kind of siding I wanted for our house.  Our last house had traditional horizontal siding, and I loved it!  Also, we have some more modern elements going on, so I wanted to make sure to keep lots of traditional as well to balance it all out.  And (see I have lots of reasons…), I am pretty sure we’ll have a metal raised seam roof, and those vertical “stripes” of the roof plus the vertical “stripes” of the other option, vertical siding, seemed like an awful lot of stripes!

horizontal siding

But… this process has been so long that I have started second guessing some of my decisions.  Now I am waffling between traditional horizontal siding and (still very traditional) board and batten. (side note: ignore the porch roof.  these designs were before the angled roof was added in)

board and batten

To clarify, this is what I consider to be traditional horizontal siding:

And this is board and batten, the vertical siding option I would choose.

We are going to have 3 structures on our property: our main house, which is attached via a second story bridge to our garage/loft for my parents, and a barn.  The barn has been set to have board and batten so I wanted something else for the house and loft.  But now we are toying with the idea of a metal sided barn (because of a possible significant cost savings), so that means I could still have the buildings with different sidings.

A bit more information to help you weigh in on your opinion: the house will be white with some wood details, with a black roof most likely.  The barn will most likely be black with wood trim and doors.  You can see all my pins for modern farmhouse exterior inspiration here.

So which do you prefer: horizontal siding or board & batten?

Always go with your first instinct! I personally prefer the traditional horizontal, the board & batten together with the vertical lines of the roof = a lot of stripes in the same direction.

  2. 2

I prefer horizontal for the most part but my favorite is horizontal with small “pockets” of vertical for interest.

Yes! I love the contrast as well. Around our front door, we’re going to have a stained wood section, going in the opposite direction of whatever the overall siding will be going.

  3. 4

To me, the vertical looks more modern, updated. However, I agree with Jenny above, if you could somehow do small amounts of vertical along with horizontal or vice versa that would break things up.
So many choices to make when building a home, we’re in the middle of it right now. Going with your gut is best.

  4. 5

I love the vertical. Definitely more modern though. the houses you show as examples look beautiful.
I always go with my first choice…it hasn’t steered me wrong.
I can’t wait to see this come to life.

  5. 6

For modern vinyl siding, especially in white, I’d go with the traditional horizontal. But for wood, I like the old school board and batten with stone fireplace. Go figure….

  6. 7

I like the traditional horizontal. When it comes to building or remodeling a house it’s crazy how much you have to think about. After awhile your brain hurts. You’ll make a good choice and it will look great.

  7. 8

Board and Batten! Fewer lines, more calming, less busy :) But I like them both!

  8. 9

I like the horizontal option best. I just think it adds a bit of traditional with that metal roof.

  9. 10

I think the horizontal is more contemporary and modern. The board and batten is more farmhouse style. I am not sure – but I think you lean more towards modern, clean lines so the horizontal would work great. But with a barn you could be a more modern farmhouse style where board and batten could work. You are right! It is a huge decision! I am more classic and would gravitate toward board and batten.

    Traditional horizontal!

  11. 12

Vertical if you’re wanting it to be more architectural :)

So I used to work for a company that built buildings manufactured by Wick Buildings(they do standing seam roofs and they are great! So are Butler Buildings standing seam roofs!) – they have LOTS of photos of completed projects on their website and on builder websites and just the internet in general – photographs of projects were VERY encouraged haha!

Is your siding on the house going to be metal? Because, if so, I recommend not going with the vertical – often the metal roof and metal siding together just seemed….weird looking. I don’t want to say it looked cheap, because that wasn’t it exactly – more like, it was the easy solution and it showed? ESPECIALLY if the colors of the roof and siding were contrasting – one of my favorite completed projects was a black roof with a charcoal metal siding and it looked so sharp. But I’d say that’s only if both materials are metal.
However, if your siding will be wood, I’d think you’d be ok with going vertical, as long as the vertical panels were about half the width of the roof panels, so scale purposes.
I also think horizontal siding looks great with metal roofs – try looking at log cabins, a lot of them these days are built with metal roofs and you can get the same visual idea from the horizontal logs and the vertical lines of the standing seam roof.

Let me know if you have any metal roof questions! I’m a BIG fan of them and plan to use them on a home of mine someday!

So much helpful information! I am going to check out their websites. To clarify, our siding on the main house would be neither wood or metal, but a concrete hardy board that is designed to look like wood. We used that in the past and its the most recommended for our area, for fire reasons and hardiness with nearby ocean weather.

    Vertical, love that look!

I like the look of the board and batten. I think it looks like a modern farmhouse. Whatever you choose will be gorgeous because you have amazing taste. I can’t wait to watch your building progress!

I’ve been following your blog for some time now. I think the vertical looks more like your style.

That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.

  18. 20

I think the horizontal is more traditional, farmhouse. The vertical is a bit more modern and also visually busy. So, I would say it depends on your style.

It may be hard to know, but I think you should look beyond today and ask yourself if you think you would get tired of looking at one of the looks after many years. Does one of the looks “lock” you in to a look you might not like in 10 years? The horizontal, to me, is more traditional….timeless. Whereas, the vertical is modern and has the possibility of leaving you wishing you had gone horizontal. Make sense? I think that’s how I would have to approach it. I think both are beautiful…..and like others have said, whatever you choose, will be amazing. I think you just need to ask yourself, with the decision made, will you have wished for the other choice!!

  20. 22

I like them both, but I lean more towards the horizontal.

  21. 23

I like the horizontal better with all the other vertical roof lines going on.

  22. 24

We just finished building. We had the same back and forth thing going. We went with board and batten, but didn’t do a metal roof for now. I love our choice of siding! We haven’t regretted it at all! I think you should just go with what you love. We actually had some of the same photo inspo that you posted. You will be able to make whatever you choose look great!
