what i wore wednesday

welcome to wiww!  if you’re new here, this is a fun place where we share our weekly outfits, to encourage one another to just get dressed!  get out of the yoga pants and spend 10 minutes on yourself, already!

before we jump in to the outfits, did you see my pin it to win it contest?  winner gets $50 to my shop – woohoo!

what i wore wednesday at the pleated poppy

this is an old cardigan, but worn in a new way.  its one of those that has really long front tails and i never really know what to do with them.  this time i grabbed the bottom corner of each tail and wrapped them across my chest and around my neck, securing in the back with a huge safety pin – it worked!  this was perfect for a cozy day at home.

this outfit makes me so happy!  for lots of reasons: i felt cute in it, but still super cozy. it was casual, but the gold on the shirt bumped it up a slight notch.

but my very favorite part?  my socks.  actually, showing my socks.  if i’m wearing socks, which is every winter day, i wear cute, silly, funky socks.  mostly polka dots and stripes and argyle.  but you never really see them.  and i love to wear my pants cuffed, but that doesn’t work for me in the winter because i hate having cold ankles.  so the fact that i was able to wear my pants cuffed and have on socks made me so happy!  yes, its kinda nerdy, but i’ll call it nerdy chic ;)

ramblings from a day

what do i do when i have a full list of to-do’s?

make cookies, of course!

well, first i dropped the kids off at school, then ran to ups, usps, the craft store, and i dropped off my sewing machine to be serviced.

and by the time i did all that, i got a call from the school saying lily wasn’t well.

to school i went to scoop up my girl.  poor thing had a raging headache and fell right asleep when she got home.

so while she slept i baked.  i knew she was really not feeling well when she didn’t even come out to help me.

our family has been on a baking kick lately.  sean and lily have been baking bread a couple days a week – he bought her a dutch oven for christmas.

and i made a couple coffee cakes last night – we polished one off this morning, and i’m thinking of stealing a slice for dessert tonight…

this recipe is my maternal grandma’s.  i have another great one from my paternal grandma – i’m thinking i need to make her’s soon, just to compare, you know? ;)

we have a small but growing pile of christmas decorates we forgot to pack away.  it will most likely stay in our house for a month.  i’m a piler and i have a really hard time getting through random piles.

delivery day!  more scarf fabric arrived today and even more should be here tomorrow.  and fabric for this scarf is on order now, too.

once i put away the nativity scene, i had to fill the empty.  this works for now, but i’m sure i’ll start tinkering with it soon.

every year i feel kinda guilty putting away the nativity scene, like i’m putting away jesus.  anyone else feel that way… or am i just crazy?  if i wasn’t afraid of it breaking, i think it would be cool to keep it out all year.

after i picked up the other 2 kids at school, we came home for a few, then off to gym (gymnastics).  since the kids don’t start at the same time, i bring some of our homeschool work with so we can get a jump on the next day.

in an attempt to add some sparkles to my mantle, as a new year kinda thing, i pulled out all the silver items i had and the milk glass.

this picture looks far prettier than it is in person.  in real life, it looks more like a really good garage sale!  too much clutter.

a few times a year, i make a huge batch of chili.  i mean HUGE. tons of veggies and beans and meat and good stuff.  anyhoo, i put it all in gallon freezer bags and have a meal in each bag.  since we don’t get home until late, the bag of frozen chili is a welcome meal – just pop it in a sink of warm water, then reheat it over the stove.  and we made some honey butter to spread on our fresh bread.  super yummy.

we’re trying to cram in some extra school work because i’m heading out of town on thursday, so we’ll be missing on 2 homeschool days.  we spent after dinner on math and history and lit.  while i read to si, sean read the girls one of their history books.  it made me thankful to have a husband that is willing to team up with me on my crazy ideas.

now that the kids are all snug in their beds, i’ve already written 2 posts, painted a background on 2 canvases, started a load of laundry and eaten one cookie.

oh, and watched an episode of numbers on hulu – its so good!

and watch out other cookies… i am coming after you!

pin it to win it!

haaaaappy mondaaaaaay!

my kids go back to school today, which for some people is a relief.  but for me, it means more work (since we homeschool part-time).  i love love love vacations so we can stay at home and just be.  no pressures, no deadlines.  looks like i need to hold out until spring break to get my next time off with the kiddos…  all that “happy monday” stuff was more of a pep talk to myself than anything ;)

but in the mean time, i have something fun for you!  since last week’s little giveaway was so much fun, why not have another?!

life rearranged

i’m linking up my phone pics with jeannett again! if you’re on instagram, i’m thepleatedpoppy.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

after our flu-filled week last week, we decided this week would be our attempt at a do-over.  praise the Lord – it was!

with only one day home after our christmas travels, we did our laundry and repacked our bags, woke up at 2am and headed north to bend, oregon.  some of our oldest friends live there with their crew of kids.  we usually visit in the summer, but we needed to get our fill of snow.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

the kids were awesome on the drive.  after 14 hours in the car, the kids said it only felt like 1!  thank you audio books and movies!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

ahhh, my love.  he drove almost the entire time.  he is such a giver.  my favorite of all time ever.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we had snow a lot of our drive, but thankfully the roads were clear.  until this stretch.  thick slippery ice.  yuck.  super slow going, but at least the view was beautiful!  on this same stretch on our way home we had to wait for over an hour while 2 separate semi trucks were jack-knifed.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

after a small embroidery project in the car, i went back to my 4th grade roots and made a little friendship bracelet.  after a couple missteps on my first try, i found this tutorial that reminded me to do double knots, then it all came back to me!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

sean is super dad.  every night he gets the kids down while i start work.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

home or away, he falls asleep with a book on his head.  this time he had a death grip on it and wouldn’t let me take it off!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

mt. bachelor is only about 30 minutes from our friends’ house, and they have a free bunny slope.  how awesome is that?!  we borrowed snow clothes from friends and our oregon friends gathered boards and boots for the kids (sean and i had our own) and we hit the slopes.

after not being on a board in over 10 years (pre-kids), i was surprised how quickly it came back.  and all of my kids took to it quickly, too!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

yes it was cold (one day as low as 4*!), but it was so pretty!  i grew up in the mountains, getting some snow in the winter, and i do miss it.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

new year’s eve was so fun.  just a couple families, a gang of kids, and just dance on the wii.  these girls have known each other since they were in utero, and fall back in love with each other every time they see each other – its precious.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

these boys have known each other since childhood and fall back in love with each other, too ;)

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we took a break from boarding to go sledding.  the dad’s scouted out a great location at a golf course – it had the perfect hills for us!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i thought snow angels would be fun… until i smacked my head hard on the snow.  i was reminded of my dumb choice the next day when i was hit in the back of the head with the chairlift… i’m not so graceful.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we needed this week.  it was amazing.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

it turns out i’m not a great snowboard instructor, so i did better with silas than the girls, since he caught on so quickly and didn’t really need much instruction.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

the time on the lifts was a great way to connect and enjoy the funny thoughts of the kids.  and eat snacks and treats.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

sean, on the other hand, was an amazing teacher.

yay for do-over weeks!

can you see me now? **CLOSED**

**THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED**

yes, this is a post about facebook updates. stick with me, i promise it will be worth it at the end!! (wink, wink)

so… i have learned recently that i may have disappeared from your facebook news feed. :(

turns out since facebook required us all to move to timeline, some of you haven’t been able to see the pleated poppy posts, even though you have liked the shop!

last month, over 4,000 of my readers each day saw the 12 deals of christmas sales and snagged a lot of great products! sometimes i put discount codes on facebook only, so i want to make sure everyone can see them. plus facebook is the most practical place where we can all interact and get to know each other!!

so, if you are willing to do one of these two little steps below, you can make sure that you are seeing my posts AND there may just be a little something-something as a thank you!

there are two ways to be sure you are seeing the pleated poppy. pick whichever option works for you!

option #1:

option #1 is the quickest way and will make sure that the pleated poppy shows up in your regular news feed along with all those cute baby pictures and really funny e-cards!

1) log on to your facebook account

2) at the top of the screen, you will see the words “search for people, places, and things” — in this space type “the pleated poppy

3) when the pleated poppy page comes up, hold your mouse over the “LIKE” button. (if you haven’t liked the pleated poppy before, you’ll need to do that first!) then click “show in news feed

this will make sure that when you log on to facebook and see your news feed, you will be able to see all the pleated poppy posts, pics, tutorials, etc!

option#2:

option #2 will allow you to create a “favorites” page where you can add the pleated poppy to keep it separate from all your friends and family posts. this is what i use. i have one for family, local friends, faraway friends, church friends, old friends from college who i never see… you get it, right? i like this option because it keeps everything neat and tidy. no scrolling through endless posts to find the latest update. if option #2 is for you… read on!

1) log on to your facebook account

2) at the top of the screen, you will see the words “search for people, places, and things” — in this space type “the pleated poppy

3) when the pleated poppy page comes up, hold your mouse over the “LIKE” button. (if you haven’t liked the pleated poppy before, you’ll need to do that first!) then click “add to interest lists

4) once you click “add to interest lists“, a new drop down menu will show up (see below). click “new list.”

5) a new page will pop up that shows that the pleated poppy will be in this new interest list. if you have other blogs or people you want to set apart as “must reads”, add them to this list too. i’m keeping mine just with the pleated poppy only so i can see all of my posts easily. when you are finished, click “next.”

6) LAST STEP!!! now just name your new interest list whatever you like! i’ve chosen to call mine “the pleated poppy blog.” this is when you can choose who can see your new list: public, friends, or just you. click “done” when finished!

now you can see your new list on the left hand side of your screen. anytime you want to go directly to the pleated poppy posts, just click your new list!

if you want to get super fancy, click on the blue pencil next to your new list and select “add to favorites.” this will move your new list to the top left of your page making it much easier to find!

i hope that helps! thanks for hanging in there with me on this detailed step-by-step tutorial!

as a thank you, if you choose to update your facebook page to see the pleated poppy posts, you will be entered into a giveaway for a $50 gift card to my shop! let’s start the year off with some good shopping!!!

to enter, choose either step 1 or step 2 as listed above and update your facebook page. when you finish, come back here and leave me a comment letting me know that you like the pleated poppy and which update option you used.

contest will be open until saturday at noon (PST)!

hey friends!  welcome to “what i wore wednesday”!  this is my weekly post where i share what i wore all week in an ongoing effort to stay out of my sweats and put just a little effort into myself.  are you feeling the desire to get out of your daily rut and try something new?  link up with me and find inspiration in all the other ladies here each week!

this week has been a mishmash of traveling, relaxing, more traveling, and more relaxing, so i definitely leaned towards the comfy!

i like to play with proportions a bit.  sometimes it works.  sometimes it doesn’t.  while i think this outfit would’ve been better without the long sleeves under, it was too cold not to.  i’m ok with that!

wrapping station

when we built our house, we had some oversights.  like no coat closet.  or broom closet.  which lead to nowhere for wrapping supplies storage. (or broom storage, or coat storage)

so i had to get creative.

our sofa table has become the perfect spot to store everything we need.  and its all accessible by the kids, who are honing their wrapping skills.

the top 3 drawers hold all the smaller supplies.

the first drawer holds: ribbons and twine, and super small gift bags.

the second drawer holds gift tags and labels, tape, scissors, and a pen.

the third drawer hold tissue paper (which i am nearly out of, thanks to christmas gift wrapping).  we also have a couple rocks in that drawer to weigh down the tissue paper and hold it in place.

i have a slight obsession with vintage luggage, but it does come in handy for storage.  these suitcases hold supplies neatly and discretely.

i love wrapping paper from target’s $ spot.  not only is it just a buck, but it comes in short little rolls and fits perfectly in the suitcase.  for my longer rolls, i store them above the shelves in the playroom.

the other suitcase holds gift boxes and bags.

how easy is that?!  what i love most is that it doesn’t looks like a wrapping station, but just part of my house!

antler jewelry stand

antler jewelry stand

when i was doing a little shopping at world market a few weeks ago, i couldn’t help but do some extra shopping for friends and family while i was there.

my 13 year old niece just had her room redone, so i thought a little something for her room would be fun.  but buying for a teenager is tricky!

antler jewelry stand

i settled on this deer jewelry holder, but i didn’t think the antique gold finish was quite right for her.

antler jewelry stand

i decided to spray it in a glossy grey, so it could really go with any room changes she may go through.

because this holder would have things hung on it, i wanted to make sure the finish held up really well.  i sprayed 2 thin coats of primer and then at least 3 coats of the glossy grey.

antler jewelry stand

i also got her a few rings from forever 21 to start off a little collection!

antler jewelry stand

if i was making this for myself, i would’ve probably chosen a bright coral or something, but i do love the grey!

{this is not a sponsored post – i just love my finds from world market!}

instafriday

life rearranged

linking up my weekly phone pics with jeannett again! i’m thepleatedpoppy on instagram if you want to follow.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

so thankful for a long break from school and some extra playdates for my boy.  and so thankful he has sweet friends!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we did our little family christmas early before we headed to orange county to be with sean’s family.  this was our first time doing christmas gifts at home and i am so glad we did, because the rest of our week turned out less than stellar…

the pic above was sean’s wrap job on silas’ new skate board.  i was just thankful i didn’t have to wrap another present!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i also got a huge order from hawthorne threads just before we left.  i really wanted to bring it all with me to pet in the car (you think i’m kidding?), but decided that wasn’t a good choice.  i accidentally bought a few yards of flannel, thinking it was quilter’s cotton, so i did bring that with in hopes to make myself some new jammie bottoms.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

but.

remember last week when our family all had the flu, except for si?  well, he got it on our way down south.  poor guy was such a trooper and had a great attitude.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

thankfully, the next day (christmas eve) he felt better and we took him to the vans skate park in orange.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we pretended he was six so he could go in and ride with sean.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

he was so fun to watch!  they ended up staying for a few hours.  the girls and i watched for a bit, then went window shopping for a couple hours.  we were totally late to the church service, but it was so worth it because after that, the fun basically ended.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

lily ended up getting the flu again, this time on christmas morning (and all day), so she and i spent the day in captivity in our room, snuggling and watching movies and napping.

then silas got it (again!) on the day of our annual family olympics, so he and i both missed out on all the fun again.

then the girls went to a slumber party with their cousins and gracie came home early feeling sick.  so we decided to head home a day early and silas had to miss his special cousin time seeing the space shuttle in l.a.  and our family missed out on visiting close friends.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

our normally 4 hour drive home took well over 6 with all our potty stops (things are still not running properly!), but we are finally home.  home has never been a more welcome sight!

during all of these sick bugs, my kids have had great attitudes, even laughing right after throwing up, or giggling on the potty.  they have been troopers.  i tried for the first couple days to have a good attitude and count this extra time with them as a blessing, and see this little bit of sickness as nothing compared to major illnesses.  but my patience has worn thin and my rose colored glasses are off.  i am super bummed we basically missed christmas.  we missed traditions and celebrating.  we missed bonding with our loved ones.  we missed our friends.

and unfortunately, we also left our family with the flu big and have been knocking them out, one by one.

i am so thankful that we still have another week off of school to try to redeem last week!
