what i wore wednesday

welcome to what i wore wednesday!  in case you’re new here, here’s a little background on what all this craziness is about:  after years of staying home with my kids, my effort in the style department was in serious decline.  i mean, i felt like putting on sweats and a baseball hat was getting dressed!  most days i didn’t bother getting out of my pj’s.  one day i decided to start posting pics of my daily outfits on my blog to motivate myself to put a little more effort into my appearance.  and so my weekly post of “what i wore wednesday” was born!

what i wore wednesday at the pleated poppy

this week i went back east to pennsylvania for allume.  it was an exhausting weekend, but i am really glad i went.  lots of late nights and early mornings – i should be used to it, but i feel like i am still catching up on my sleep.

this is kind of my standard travel outfit:

cardigan – all saints

top – banana republic

jeans – target

boots – steve madden

i know its easier to travel wearing flats rather than boots, but i was only taking a carry on and i didn’t want to try to squeeze my boots into it, so on they went!

(custom phone case – a drop of golden sun)

infinity scarf – the pleated poppy (i just added more to the shop!)

playroom & studio tour

playroom

its been a little while since i took you on a playroom tour, and since we were part of a homeschool room tour a couple weekends ago, i figured i should take some pictures while it was clean!

playroom

as some of you may know, we homeschool part time, 3 days a week, so this room gets used for that a lot.  but beyond schooling, we LIVE in this room.  this is where we do art projects, where most of the toys are, where we spend most of our days.

my husband’s company built the desks and storage areas, so we got to design everything to fit our needs.  we were able to build 4 desks along the window wall, 1 for me and 3 for the kids.

playroom

the big wall is our main storage wall, helping to keep everything in its place.

playroom

behind those big doors are 2 huge plastic dollhouses, a broken tv (why?!), and piles of fabric.  the drawers are used every day and hold:  puzzles, playmobiles, polly pockets, and stuffed animals.

playroom

this side of the wall holds miscellaneous crafts supplies, office supplies, our printer/copier, and some work supplies, like ribbon and fabric scraps in teh locker baskets.

playroom

this side is lily’s desk and holds some homeschool supplies & curricula and kids craft supplies (which are scattered throughout the house as well).

playroom

the colored baskets are from land of nod and hold yarn, ribbon, and math manipulatives.  the silver boxes hold craft paints and stamps/ink pads.

playroom

i think most of these jars are from walmart and target.  i love them!  i use them for my sewing supplies as well.  i like to be organized, but still see what i have.

playroom

since the kids don’t always love sitting at their desks, they work here at the table a lot.  my mom got me the vintage chairs.  the basket under the table holds blankets for fort making and snuggling.

playroom

this old coke crate is key to organization.  my kids like to draw.  A LOT.  so having a central place for them to find all their supplies is key.  and, since they are able to find it easily, they are also able to put it back easily (in theory).

playroom

and here’s my “studio” space.  i actually love sharing space with the kids.  they are at an age now where i can leave my work out and not worry about them getting into it.  thats good and bad since i just tend to leave it out and let it pile up!

playroom

i spend a lot of time here – thankfully the view is pretty amazing from my desk!  and for the record, my desk is never this clean!  it usually has homeschool papers scattered to the left of my laptop and work papers scattered to the right, along with random projects and mending to be done.

playroom

this also is a rare sight:  a clean cutting table!  i tend to work on multiple projects at a time and this space gets pretty piled with stacks of fabrics i want to use together.  then they just wait there until i can actually get to them.

playroom

this is the most bare my fabric shelves have been in a long time, but that may be because the drawers below are filled with fabric as well!  i love having all the clear jars above holding all my notions right where i can see them.

playroom

the sliding baskets below hold bolts of fabric, miscellaneous projects that have literally been waiting for 3 years to get completed (not happening), bloom belt supplies, post cards and promotional fliers, works in progress, scissors and al sorts of glues and glue guns.

playroom

i always like looking at how other people organize things, so i thought i’d share my drawers with you:  this drawer holds most of my work office supplies (i have another drawer for school office supplies) – phone & camera cords, misc batteries & plugs, stamps, tape, business cards, envelopes…

playroom

and the bottom drawer holds lots of tiny sewing supplies.

for those of you interested in how i homeschool in this room, i’ll be doing another tour soon, walking you through the homeschool aspects of our playroom!

at the end of a long week, mama doesn’t want to cook.  who am i kidding?  i don’t even want to cook at the beginning of the week!  and this guy?  he was all sorts of angry because he couldn’t snap his fingers.  not sure how he even though of it, but he was m a d!

lisa’a new gold line is here!  isn’t it all so pretty?!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i drove down to LAX wednesday night because i had to fly out at 6am thursday morning for allume.  this was my bed at the hotel.  yes, so very generous to give me 5 pillows.  but… they were tiny!  so weird.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

now i’m at allume and i got some good time with maggie – so fun!  i’m exhausted from little sleep and lots of travel, so i’m being antisocial and already in bed (its only 7pm at home).

globe themed adoption shower

globe themed baby adoption shower

a couple weeks ago i had the pleasure of hosting a shower for my sweet friend joy, who had just welcomed home her 18month old son ezra  from korea!  we had been waiting for him for about 2 years, so this was cause to celebrate!
as soon as we first saw his picture, i started planning his shower in my head, and then on pinterest.  my ideas changed over time, as you can see on my pinterest board, but i am so happy with where i ended up!
globe themed baby adoption shower
because ezra had to travel across the world to get here, i thought a globe theme seemed appropriate ;)
globe themed baby adoption shower
most of the globes were from my collection i keep above my kitchen cabinets and scattered throughout the house, and some were borrowed.
globe themed baby adoption shower
i ran a roll of kraft paper down the center of our big dining room table, and covered the 2 additional folding tables in white sheets.
globe themed baby adoption shower
because joy is so well loved, i had a lot of help with this shower.  another friend of ours and her kids wrapped all the bottles and jars with varying colors of blue and green yarn.

globe themed baby adoption shower

we originally talked about using a variety of white flowers for the bottles, but there wasn’t much available, then my friend found these feathery grasses on the side of the road and they worked great!  and they were free, which is always good, and added a bit more masculinity to the whole look.

globe themed baby adoption shower

even though its more work, if i can i love having the tables set for the guests rather than having a stack of plates near the food.  there’s just something extra special about it.

globe themed baby adoption shower

my friend also cut strips of an old map and wrapped them around the napkins, and sealed it with a little sticker with ezra’s name, his birth date, and his homecoming date.

globe themed baby adoption shower

ezra came home to 3 older siblings and this is his big sister realizing her baby brother’s name is on a sticker!

globe themed baby adoption shower

i have been wanting to try making some paper medallions and this was the perfect time to try them out.  they were so easy that even sean and the kids made some for me.  the ones with more intricate designs were from a martha stewart kit i got from consumer crafts (on sale – yay!).

globe themed baby adoption shower

joy and i always throw showers together since she is so good in the kitchen and i’m… not.  so thankfully, another friend came to the rescue with a ton of cooking experience and organized the whole thing – yay!

we asked several other friends to help out by bringing baked goods and guess what:  they ALL brought scones!  it was pretty funny to have a buffet of scones, but i didn’t complain since i love them!

globe themed baby adoption shower

our friend heading up the food also made some homemade yogurt, topped with fresh berries and sliced almonds, which we kept in a bowl of ice on the counter.

globe themed baby adoption shower

each yogurt was in a tiny mason jar (the ones my kids drink out of) and the lid was topped with a piece of paper and a spoon was tied on with a few wraps of baker’s twine.

globe themed baby adoption shower

i kept the drinks super simple, just water, lemonade and coffee.  these 2 drink containers have really come in handy over the years!  the white one was from pottery barn and the igloo one was from a garage sale, i think.

globe themed baby adoption shower

one difficult thing about using mason jars at parties is that everyone’s glass looks alike, so adding some simple tags with washi tape (from target, in the office supply section) solved the problem!

globe themed baby adoption shower

a fun container with crazy adorable paper straws is such a fun touch.

globe themed baby adoption shower

and i added a little washi tape to wooden stirrers for the coffee drinkers.

 joyful :)

globe themed baby adoption shower

a couple washi tape banners strung on baker’s twine, hanging from my shelves.

globe themed baby adoption shower

and i just swapped out a few details on my mantle – added the wrapped jars and a “welcome home ezra” banner.

globe themed baby adoption shower

one of my favorite details of the shower was that joy’s sister gave the devotional.  joy also was adopted from korea as a baby and her sister was able to share her memories of their mom praying for her baby across the world – it was so sweet!

minimal fall decor {sponsored giveaway} *CLOSED*

***THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED***

i am fully aware that so many people LOVELOVELOVE fall, but me?  not so much.  well, correction:  i do love fall, just not so much the typical decor that goes along with the season change.  our fall weather here is awesome, like better than summer awesome.  so when i should be pulling out the wheat stalks and scarecrows, we are still hanging up our beach towels to dry.  it just feels wrong!

last year, i went big on halloween decor for lily’s costume party, but this year it feels so good to hide the glittered pumpkins and go super simple.

minimal fall decor

my fall decor is focusing more on the “back-to-school” idea, with globes and maps.  i found this huge vintage map at a local flea market years ago and added a washi tape banner at the top.  i also dangled a little paper heart over our little part of the country ;)

minimal fall decor

these sweet velvet pumpkins from the love feast table shop are my favorite new fall additions!  they are non-traditional, and the colors are still a bit summery.  they add just the perfect amount of “fall” to my house!

  minimal fall decor

the best part, besides the amazing color and quality of the fabrics (believe me, i know good fabric!), the REAL stems!  do you see the curlycues?!  ah, so pretty!

  minimal fall decor

anyone who sees these are immediately drawn to them, and they are amazed by them – seriously!  you look at them and the quality is so amazing – they are heavily weighted and not some ball of velour filled with fluff.

and lucky for us, the ladies at love feast table have generously offered one velvet pumpkin trio to one of you!

head on over to their shop and check out all their items, not just the pumpkins – the love feast shop offers so much more!  they also have velvet mushrooms and acorns, all sorts of household items, and even jewelry.  find your favorite and come back here and tell me what it is!

check out their facebook page, too!

and they still have their discount running from the sponsor shout out: 15% off this big ranch set of pumpkins until october 31st

fabric scrap ideas

as you might have guessed, i have quite a large collection of fabric scraps.   and i don’t throw any of it away!  i love sorting through my scraps and remembering quilts i’ve made with them, or skirts i’ve made for my girls, or some of my favorite products.

i’ve also  created a pinterest board where i’ve collected some really fun ideas to use up all of those scraps!  be sure to click on the links below to get to their original source (a few of them are my own!).

oh how i love quilts!  i love how an antique craft can be made so modern and fun!  i enjoy the whole process of making quilts, from choosing the fabrics, to cutting them, to piecing and pulling it all together.

one thing i realized about this collection of quilt ideas is how much white is in each of them… looks like i’m heading a certain direction with my next quilt!

fold over clutches from the pleated poppy

remember this sneak peek i gave you on thursday?
well today is reveal day!
fold over clutches from the pleated poppy
i am so excited about these!  as always, i like everything i make to be versatile – no one hit wonders here.
these clutches are fabulous as is – as a clutch – whether its for day or night!
fold over clutches from the pleated poppy
but these also function as e-reader cases or ipad cases!  when they are unfolded they nearly double in size – about 11″ x 10″!
one of my favorite details are the tiny leather tassel zipper pulls – fancies it up a bit, don’t you think?
and i have so many styles for you to choose from!
fold over clutches from the pleated poppy
my only problem: deciding which one i want to bring with me to allume!
i also restocked all of my messenger bags, these two popular styles of pencil pouches, and these two wristlet clutches.
i just got more scarf fabric in on friday so i hope to be adding more scarves within a few days – some restocking and some new!

chevron bandana quilt

chevron bandana quilt from the pleated poppy

i recently received a shopping spree opportunity with ConsumerCrafts.com, an online craft store.  it took me forever to decide what i wanted to buy because it was like walking around a craft store and being told, “get whatever you want!  what are you going to make with it?”.  kind of stressful, but oh so fun!  the site is amazing and i had to focus on making a fun craft – i kept getting distracted by all the supplies that would be great for a variety of homeschool activities.

since my strength is in sewing, i deciding to narrow my focus on something i could sew.  i found the section with bandanas and was lured in by all the color options!  and at 97 cents a piece, i was able to get a bunch!   Consumer Crafts has amazing prices!

with us smack in the middle of soccer season, i thought we could always use another picnic blanket to throw on the grass for watching games.  i really wanted to do a rainbow colored pattern, but decided to go much more masculine since 2/5 of my family members are of the male species ;)  i chose navy, grey and white.

after making this quilt with a little strip of chevron on the back, i really have been wanting to do another on a larger scale.

i ordered 8 navy, 8 grey, and 3 white bandanas for this project.

materials needed:

21 bandanas

full size sheet for backing

quilt batting (i prefer warm ‘n’ natural brand)

thread

sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, and ruler

patience ;)

chevron bandana quilt

 1.  first things first, wash and press the bandanas.  and because bandanas are never truly square, i needed to even them up a bit.  i followed a thin black line on the outer printed section of the bandana, measured an inch out and cut off whatever was beyond that.

2.  next i cut the square into 2 triangles, cutting from one corner to the next, using the rotary cutter.  its ok if it doesn’t line up perfectly straight since you’ll be squaring it up later.

3. & 4.  cut the 2 triangles in half again, making a total of 4 smaller triangles from each bandana.

chevron bandana quilt

 1.  see those angled lines on the cutting mat?  i used those for the first time!

2.  i stacked up the smaller triangles 4 at a time, lining up one corner and the base line.  then i lined them up along that 45 degree line and whacked them off so they were all even.

3.  then i turned the stack of triangles around and evened out the other side along the 45 degree line.  then i did this to all the other bandanas.

chevron bandana quilt

 1.  now comes the fun part!  i just wanted one row of white chevron and then alternating rows of navy and grey.  as you can see in the first pic, i basically made a bunch of squares out of all the triangles.

2.  then when all the squares are lined up, they make rows or chevron stripes.  now this is important:  take a picture of this part!  you’ll use it soon…

chevron bandana quilt

 1.  now comes the sewing, and even though its a lot, it goes really fast.  just a bunch of straight lines.  first i sewed each of those squares, then set them right back on the ground in their place to make sure i kept the pattern in order.

2.  once i sewed all the squares i pressed all the seams open.

3.  then i layed them all out again in order (referring back to that picture i took earlier).  then i stacked them all up in their rows.

4.  working at my machine with my computer right next to me so i could refer to the picture, i started sewing all the squares together in strips.

chevron bandana quilt

1.  next i pressed those seams open and then sewed all the strips together.  then i pressed those seams open and voila!  the quilt top is done!

2.  i just wanted to show you a picture of the quilt batting i use.  its so much softer than the yucky cheap batting.  i used a 40% off coupon at my local fabric store.

3.  i layed out the batting nice and flat, making sure that there were no wrinkles, then spread the quilt top (right side up) on top.  i started at the edges and smoothed it out nice and flat.

4.  then i trimmed the extra batting off and pinned the top to the batting at each triangle point.  i pinned a ton because i didn’t want the batting to shift at all.

chevron bandana quilt

this next section is where i cheat as a quilter!   i don’t like to bind quilts (ok, i’ve never bound a quilt!), so i figured out a way around that to finish the edges:

1.  i bought this sheet set on sale at target – it just went perfectly with the bandanas.  i like to use sheets for quilt backs because they are inexpensive and huge!  for an inexpensive option, you can get flat sheets at walmart.

2.  now i spread the sheet out on the ground, face up, and layed the quilt top/batting on top, face down.  i pinned the sheet to the top/batting around the edge.  then i trimmed the extra sheet off.

3.  starting in the middle of one edge, i used a slightly larger seam allowance (to make sure i captured all 3 layers) and stitched all around the edge, leaving a gap about 1 1/2 – 2 ft wide.

4.  see the opening?  thats where i turned the quilt inside out.  i was really careful to go slowly so i didn’t stab myself with the pins i had on the quilt top.

chevron bandana quilt

 1.  i trimmed the excess fabric off the corners.

2.  then i used a chopstick to poke out the corners.  tools of the trade ;)

chevron bandana quilt

1.  see the opening?  i pressed the edges under while i was pressing all the edges of the quilt to make them nice and flat.

2.  i stitched the opening shut using a really small seam allowance, going as close to the edge as possible.

3.  then i topstitched all around the perimeter.

4.  then i layed out the whole quilt flat again and repinned the pins that were still holding the quilt top to the batting so that they now went through all 3 layers. next i did what’s called “stitch in the ditch” – where i stitched down the middle of a seam.  i did this along the chevron pattern so that on the backside of the quilt had a chevron pattern stitched in it.

last step:  wash it!  i love the way a quilt puckers and puffs when its been washed and dried a bunch of times.

chevron bandana quilt
