free posy hair clip friday

and because its friday, and i like fridays, let’s have a free friday, ok?!

head on over to my shop, ORDER ANYTHING, and get your free posy hair clip!

(note:  one posy hair clip comes with each order.  no coupon code necessary to enter.)

pretty packaging

i am pretty consistent with my packaging for products from my shop – i want customers to be excited about their package and feel like they are opening a gift, but i don’t want to cut into my profit too much by using expensive materials or take too much time with an elaborate wrap job.
using pretty tissue paper and twine has been my simple solution!  after each order is wrapped in a protective poly bag, we wrap it in tissue paper.  for years i have used chocolate brown paper, but have just found the perfect coral pink that i think is perfect!  we bought a giant spool of baker’s twine with a thread of green running through it.
the package is simply wrapped with the baker’s twine and tied with a bow, then we slip my business card under.
but something was missing…
i found these amazing cards from pen & paint and right away i knew they’d be perfect!  i have a stack of them that i can write little thank you notes on to my customers and then tuck them in with their package.
the colors of the card are amazing and look perfect with the bright coral paper – i only wish the cards came with handwriting lessons (i can’t stand my handwriting!).
pen & paint is owned by lindsay (great name!), a busy mama of 2 boys who loves sharing her happy artwork & hopes to inspire others to small things with great love!
there are so many pretty things in her shop – go check them out!
if you find something you like, use code POPPY15 through october 31st for 15% off your order!

what i wore wednesday

welcome to wiww!  if you are new here, here’s a little background:  one day i looked at myself in the mirror and realized i had been wearing my jammies all day. and the day before that i maybe got dressed up in sweats.  yup, sweats.  fancy.  being a stay-at-home mom put me in a bad rut and it was too easy to not  take care of myself.  so i decided to take a picture of what i wore (hence the name) every day, whether it was a cute outfit or jammies or yoga pants.  the simple act of taking pictures of myself made me want to put more effort into myself, even just 10 minutes or so extra, to make myself feel just a teensy bit better.  are you in the same rut?  try it – i dare you!

queen for a day & choose joy

you all know how much i love the queen bee market, right?
well mique has just given us all yet another reason to love it!
mique is one of the most selfless people i have ever met, always putting others before herself.  she came up with a fabulous day for one winner to be
a queen for the day on friday, november 16th.  they will get their makeup and hair done, new outfit, a mini photo shoot and then have $250 to spend at the queen bee market.   the prize value is close to $1,000!  this will be open to anyone willing to be in the san diego area on that day.
go here for all the details!
*    *    *    *    *
another sweet friend of mine, emmy, is having a one day, faith-based conference on surviving infertility and adoption. the list of speakers that are coming from all over the country is pretty amazing!tickets are going on sale TODAY for earlybird registration.  tickets are $65, but will go up to $75 on november 9th.

if you or anyone you know has dealt with infertility or adoption, this is going to be a powerful conference!

hosting imperfectly

i have a friend who is an amazing hostess.  she welcomes anyone in her home at any time.  she’s able to do this, not only because this is one of her spiritual gifts, but also because she is prepared.  she always has items on hand in her pantry to throw together a meal for 2 or twenty.

while cooking is not my specialty, i have found a couple things that help me be able to open my home with relative ease for large groups.  and i’ll order pizza if i have to ;)

we’ve been a part of a growth group at our church for a few years and this session we’re meeting once a week at our house.  while this seems like it could be a daunting task (20+ people in my house each week!), i found today as i was getting ready that its really not too hard.  you just have to be willing to let go of perfection!  and having a few key elements on hand helps, too.

over my 12ish married years, i’ve slowly gathered items that help for hosting gatherings (casual dinner, birthday parties, showers).

i have this cabinet in my dining room where i store my mason jars.

mason jars have so many uses, but we use them mostly for drinking out of.  they are cheap and pretty sturdy, and you can get them at garage sales, drug stores, even grocery stores.

for our large growth group, we always eat dinner together first.  i try to keep it pretty simple – nothing fancy.

for our wedding we registered for these heavy duty plates from pottery barn.  turns out, all of my siblings and i registered for the same exact plates!  when my brother and his family moved from our town to maui a couple years ago, we got their set of plates.

after throwing lots of wedding and baby showers our first couple years of marriage, i finally decided to get some inexpensive flatware.  i got them at walmart and target for just a few dollars for a set of 8 or 12.  i always have about 30 extra forks on hand.

these tiny mason jars are what we use everyday for our kids, and work great for group settings too.

for larger gatherings, i picked up the smaller plates at a garage sale and the dinner plates at ikea for about $1 each.

so now that i’m all ready for dinner (we do dinner potluck style, so i only had to provide a side dish), its time to clean the house.

this is the area that i have given up on, perfection-wise.  well, i’ve never been a perfectionist when it comes to cleaning my house, but i have been known to spend a few hours cleaning the house when i know friends are coming over.

instead, i just covered the basics:  wiped down counters and tables, cleaned potties and sinks, and picked up piles.  i didn’t even bother to clean the floors since they were not only going to be covered with people, but covered with more dirt once the kids are running in and out of the house.

and see my white couches?  where the slipcovers aren’t even zipped since they broke in the back.  and you know what?  no one cares!

and i didn’t even bother to clean the dirty cushions since i knew piles of dirty feet would be on them.  (btw, white couches are awesome since i can just remove the covers and bleach them!)

and here’s the kids portion of our night.  piles of kids and no worries!

so next time you have an opportunity to serve your friends by hosting a gathering, ignore perfection, cover the basics, and spend your time with your friends rather than worrying about keeping the house looking nice!

sean had his first triathlon last saturday.  knowing i wouldn’t be able to spot him in the sea of yellow caps, i took a fat sharpie and marked it with huge stars so i could find him.  it worked!  thank you silas for modeling it ;)

thankfully, our heat wave is gone!  but for a few days of 100* weather, it was yuck.  my friend’s pool was the perfect solution after school.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

school went so well at home this week!  basically, homeschooling doesn’t come naturally to me so its definitely a lot of work.  but the kids were awesome and made me so proud!  here silas and lily were memorizing an emily dickinson poem.

things that make me happy!

after months of feeling in a blah work rut, i am finally feeling the inspiration kick in and this week got to see a lot of my slowly brewing ideas come to fruition!  it feels so good to get my creative mojo back – it was gone for far too long!

so in light of my newfound happiness, i thought i’d share a random rambling of other things that make me happy!  here we go:

getting homeschool done yesterday with very few hiccups, and even having time for a playdate!

getting happy mail, from here, here, and here!

choosing our vendors today for the holiday stitch market – its gonna be a good one!!!

finalizing fabric choices for the girls’ new quilts, and all of us agreeing on them (its been over 7 years since i last made them quilts!)

pretty pretty pictures of housey ideas – oh they make me happy!

 so.

it has been hot here.  like for us, crazy hot.  i think it was 101* yesterday, and somewhere near that today.  now for many of you, thats normal.  but you probably have air conditioning, don’t you?  because this type of heat only comes for a short time each year, very few people here on the central coast have air conditioning.  so we suffer.  as much as someone with all their needs abundantly met suffers ;)

anyhoo, i was pretty excited for about an hour this morning when i was able to wear jeans and slippers, but that didn’t last long…

then i spent the rest of the day as the door nazi, yelling at anyone who left it open for more than 2 seconds.
