sunny little studio {sponsored post}

it all started with a book.

lily was given this adorable book from her aunt courtney last year for christmas.  really adorable.  i highly recommend it.

lily loves it!  its all about a little girl who had a favorite dress, then grew out of it, so her mom made the dress into a shirt, then into a skirt and so on, until it was just scraps.

IMG_6067

this year for christmas, gracie decided to make some hair bows for lily just like the bows made in the book with the last scraps of the favorite dress.

but even better than that sweetness was the wrapping paper gracie made.  this is one of my favorite drawings she has ever done!

in walks one of my newer sponsors, sunny little studios.

if there were ever a sponsor that fits my artsy family perfectly, this is it!

sunny little studios takes your child’s artwork and makes soft toys or pillows from it.

IMG_6163

this is the pillow they made for lily!

when i opened the box as a surprise for the girls, i said it was from gracie for lily, and they loved it!  lily was stoked to have an amazing pillow and gracie was honored to see her work on a pillow and further appreciated.

IMG_6155

here’s a close-up of the detail in the work on the pillow.  how great is that?!  i cannot get over the details, even down to the eyelashes.

IMG_6165

isn’t that just the cutest pillow you ever saw?!

sunny little studios not only takes a child’s drawing and turns it into a multi-dimensional pillow, but they can also turn it into a sweet stuffed animal, or robot, or whatever it is they have drawn.

duck

cat

softie

they also can mail your child a “softie” for them to color and decorate themselves. these owls are so sweet!

owls

be sure visit their gallery. there are some seriously talented artists they have sewn for! or for more ideas, you can find them on pinterest too!

family pillow

check out this family pillow. i think this would be the sweetest idea would be for a mother’s day or father’s day gift!

sunny little studios has been so kind to offer all of you a discount too!  when you place your order, just include in the comment line that you learned about them from the pleated poppy to receive free shipping and handling! (offer good through april 20th)

if you do order a pillow or softie, i would love to see your final product too! take a pic and tag sunny little studios and @thepleatedpoppy on instagram or post it on facebook!

it has been years and years since we have been able to go to a good friday service.  its a late service with no childcare, and this is the first year all our kids were able to sit quietly through it.

i don’t know how i’ve had a “proper” easter all these years without it!  its amazing how getting a good reminder of what happened on good friday prepares your heart to fully appreciate easter morning!

IMG_7743

most saturday mornings sean gets up early and goes for a long bike ride.  i get up late with the kids and we get donuts.  to each his own ;)

IMG_7747

later that day the girls and i snuck away for a few hours to walk through target with our drinks (they get steamers), then home depot to pick up terrarium supplies, then to ruby rose.

IMG_7755

we spent a fun couple hours creating our terrariums in the back yard and now we get to enjoy them all day long!

IMG_7759

we dyed our eggs last minute – saturday night!  actually, all i did was make the dye and set it out for the kids and they did it all themselves!

IMG_7765

after the kids ate a bit of their easter candy (thank you grandma for sending them some!), i started craving sweets of my own.  sean had squirreled away a cadburry egg and tossed it to me.  no sooner did i finish making out with it eat it then want another one.  my man knows me so well and tossed me a second egg!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

this girl woke us up on april fools day with “mommy i just threw up!”, then quickly followed by “april fools!”

she’s a keeper ;)

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we had family come into town midweek, and instead of spending my time cleaning i decorated.  distract them with the cute, right?  ok, i cleaned a bunch, but just not all i should have.

IMG_7794

we love taking family to nearby pismo beach to search for sand dollars, explore the caves and eat clam chowder!  the weather was perfect – warm from the sun and cooled off by the chilly breeze.

IMG_7797

just a small sampling of the many beloved cousins, but it was nice to get some concentrated time with these girls.

IMG_7801

we found these gigantic starfish in the tide pools!

IMG_7806

mandy is an avid writer and she wanted me to help her make a bag to hold her writing supplies.  she picked out all the fabrics and decided what goes where and we whipped up this bag together – it was so much fun!  isn’t she just adorable!

we have a few days left of spring break and we’re headed up to santa cruz to visit my sister who is in the country for a bit from australia.  so so so excited to see her and my nephew – its been a year!

enjoy your weekend!

Q & A – personal questions

q&a

time for another q & a post!  catch up on the last one about my home here.

IMG_7295

what time do you wake and go to bed?

i try to wake up between 6 and 6:30 but i really don’t usually get out of bed until 6:30 or 7.  not too bad considering that i don’t usually go to bed until 11:30 or 12.  or 12:30…  i really want to be better about going to bed earlier, but i do the majority of my work late at night… its quiet, no one interrupts me (other than sean ;)

you mention church, but i would love to hear more about your faith.

my church and beliefs are a big part of my life, i just haven’t integrated it much into my blog, for reasons unknown to even me!  i am a christian and i attend grace church here in san luis obispo.  we’ve been at this church since we moved here 10 years ago – i’ve actually only gone regularly to 3 churches in my whole life!

so what do i believe?  lots of people say they are christians, but that means different things to different people.  i believe that God exists in the trinity: father, son, and holy spirit.  i believe that Christ is the son of God, he was born of a virgin birth, died as a sacrifice for our sins, triumphed over death when he rose from the grave, and will return again someday.  i believe we are all sinners and are born that way.   salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.  there is nothing we can do to earn our way into salvation.  i believe  our salvation is an undeserved gift.

how do you stay so thin?

(just thought i’d throw in the 9 month pregnant pic of myself for laughs!)

i may be thin, but definitely not in shape!  i attribute it to genetics and laziness ;)

i must say that we all have our things that we don’t like about our bodies, and i really am thankful for modest clothing that covers up the areas i wouldn’t want to show anyway.

****************************************************************************************

what blogs do you follow?

i have a pretty long list here, but to be honest it hasn’t been updated in a few years.  i rarely find time to read blogs anymore, but when i do i hit these ones first:

life rearranged

joy’s hope

whatever

lisa leonard

jones design co.

how do you keep your tv covered up and not watch it that often?

(our tv is hidden behind that rustic wood panel)

over the years we have gone off and on with having cable.  but over the last maybe 4 years we’ve gone without almost completely.  we do have “dish” hooked up to the house because my parents have it in their loft, but we haven’t had a working tv for quite awhile to use it.  we just don’t watch tv as a family much.  actually, the kids only get to watch what they call “movies” (a couple episodes of cartoons) on saturday mornings.  generally we just find them a show on hulu and we’ll let them watch for a bit while we sleep in.  occasionally we’ll let the kids watch a show midweek, but they know not to expect it.  honestly, i don’t know how kids find time to watch tv.  i mean, if i only had toddlers, i could see it more, but when my kids are home they are either doing schoolwork or playing or creating something (usually a mess!).  family dinners are a priority for us, then after dinner its nearly bedtime.  when would we have time to watch tv?

all that said, i watch a ton of tv, all on my computer on hulu.  while i work late at night, i have shows running in the background.

can you share some bread recipes that your husband makes?

i’ll be doing a post on this soon!  sean and lily are still somewhat new to bread making so they are still finding their favorite recipes and tweaking them to perfection.

What are you doing with all of your kids crafts and drawings ? I can’t keep everything but I never find a good way to keep the ones that I want to keep (except to pile them!!!) Do you file them ? keep them in an album? give them to your extended family !  throw them away ? Any idea ?
oh the piles and piles of “art” we gather here!  whether its a school assignment, a sunday school craft, or a treasured piece of beautiful work, 2 of my 3 kids want to keep EVERYTHING!  i have a couple solutions.  1) i throw away the not-so-beautiful stuff when they’re not looking, after its been around for a few days to be appreciated.  2) we have a tension wire strung across our playroom/school room that we hang school related art work 3) i keep a box for each of the kids to store the really amazing stuff that i want to keep forever.  i hope that helps!
come back next week for more q&a’s about my blog!

polka dot gift bags

polka dot gift bags

i always bring fun little gifts to hand out with my gift cards when i go to a conference.  for the last 3 years at blissdom, i’ve attached posy pins to my gift cards.  this year, i decided to change things up a bit!

i saw these gift bags and decided i wanted to do something similar.

polka dot gift bags

i used a couple of different pinky coral craft paints and some “spouncers” from walmart.

polka dot gift bags

i ordered a couple sets of these muslin drawstring bags from here.  i love the thicker string than the typical bags i’ve found, and they were pretty reasonable – about 29 cents a piece.

polka dot gift bags

i put some cardstock un the pouch to protect the paint from seeping through to the other side.

polka dot gift bags

i squirted some of each paint color on an old pie tin.  no need to mix them together.  i was ok if the colors varied a bit.

polka dot gift bags

ok, here’s an example of too much paint on the sponge.

polka dot gift bags

so go back to the tin and bounce it until…

polka dot gift bags

it looks like this.  the sponge actually holds quite a bit of paint.

polka dot gift bags

i just eyeballed the center of the bag

polka dot gift bags

this is what it looks like if you only press the sponge on, but…

polka dot gift bags

you need to press the sponge and then twist until the entire circle is solid.  unless you want a more artsy look and not be solid…

polka dot gift bags

here’s a solid dot.  its still wet and bubbly.

polka dot gift bags

each of my bags were a little bit different, which made them really fun to make.

polka dot gift bags

which is a good thing when you make about 45 bags.

polka dot gift bags

some of my dots overlapped the edges and i liked the look.

polka dot gift bags

because these gifts were also promotional and for marketing purposes, i needed to make sure i had them well marked.  i printed out my business name on cardstock then cut it into little flags.

polka dot gift bags

i lined up the paper flags (not on the pull tie) and stitched the paper on with a contrasting stitch.

polka dot gift bags

i trimmed the threads, then admired my work!

polka dot gift bags

then it was time to fill the bags!  i stuffed in a folded post card with a discount code.

polka dot gift bags

and most all of the bags got a travel tissue case with my business card tucked in the fold.

polka dot gift bags

polka dot gift bags

just trying to get my name across.  do you think it was clear? ;)

polka dot gift bags

a handful of these bags had some fun strands of mini bunting!

polka dot gift bags

 so pretty, right?

i’m a day late, but i’m linking up my weekly phone pics with jeannett again today!  i’m thepleatedpoppy on instagram if you want to follow along!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i traveled to blissdom last week  and the antics at our tiny airport had me laughing to myself.  as crazy as it is to travel and be away from my family for 5 days, i was so thankful to be able to fly from so close to home, to be able to be with the kids for lunch on the day i left and for coming home just in time for dinner.  having a little break is fun, but coming home is so much better!

IMG_7601

i spent a couple days at the handmade market at blissdom, and this was my setup.   i had a 50 lb weight limit for my checked luggage and this whole table of goodies weighed in at a hefty 49.5 lbs!  i call that efficient packing!

IMG_7623

lisa was my roomie for the weekend, and also my booth neighbor.  we had 2 great other booth neighbors: ashley of the shine project and rebecca of better life bags.  it was so great to meet them both!

IMG_7625

one thing i love about blissdom is getting to meet online friends in real life!  i have been wanting to meet mandy for so long!

IMG_7661

i think i brought about 45 goody bags for new and old friends.  it was so fun giving out these fun gifts!

IMG_7666

i love california, but we are missing out on one good thing:  cracker barrel!  breakfast for dinner?  yes, please!  biscuits as an appetizer?  um, ok!

IMG_7673

i missed my kids (and husband!) like crazy.  i was so thankful for facetime on my phone.  i was that person who was walking through the hotel, talking loud to my phone, showing the kids the little train track in the atrium, the water fountains, and the crazy boot print carpet.  and being able to give everyone goodnight kisses was the best!

IMG_7677

my 92 year old gram is doing the email now.  i am so excited about it!  i am horrible with traditional correspondence (letters and phone), so i’m hoping that email will work for us!

IMG_7704

one glorious day, all my kids were playing happily.  there was no fighting, or screaming, or whining.  and to top it off, i felt the urge to clean!  now, i rarely get that urge, so i decided to ignore all other responsibilities and just give into the urge.  i cleaned our bathroom for over 3 hours!  not only is it clean now, but i also cleaned out every cabinet and drawer.  it felt so good!

lily played with her babies for a couple hours and then gave herself a pedicure while her kids were all napping ;)

IMG_7705

gracie is almost 10 (aaaaack!), but she can still get lost for hours in play, and i love it.

IMG_7706

we stayed in our jammies until late in the afternoon.  it was a good day.

IMG_7708

i got 2 of these door mats from target, one for the front door and one for the back.  the gold tennies were just $7 on clearance at forever 21.  i wasn’t sure if i loved them or not, but for that price, it was worth a try!

IMG_7709

and here’s the result of all my hard work!  a clean bathroom!

IMG_7715

i didn’t stop at my bathroom.  i moved on to clean up my closet, organize our linens, and clean my room.  i did loads and loads of laundry.  when i went to put away my many tank tops, i realized i couldn’t shove another one into the drawer.  so i dumped out the whole drawer and refolded each and every one.  and then i realized i have a lot of tank tops!

over the last few years i have been wearing tank tops as undershirts almost every day.  i think it grew out of a mix of wanting an extra layer of warmth and for added modesty.

most of my tanks are mossimo from target, but lately i’ve been loving the racer back ones from forever 21 (and their low price – around $4?).

  IMG_7732

2 facts about silas:  he loves baths, and he has really long hair!

IMG_7739

emily and i were meeting about the stitch market, choosing our vendors for our upcoming market, and our girls were being awfully quiet for an awfully long time.  little did we know that they were putting on every hair clip and necklace we owned!

we have spring break this week and i have a list of projects to complete that is a mile long!  come back next week to see what i get done!
