wiww banner

welcome to what i wore wednesday!  feel free to link up your fashion posts here, and get tons of inspiration from other amazing women!  i started this linky long ago to simply push myself to get dressed every day.  the act of photographing my daily outfits pushed me out of the sweat-pants-rut and into real clothes.  over the years i have slowly become more comfortable with trying new things, more color, and fun accessories.  if you’re in a lull, join up and see what amazing changes will happen!

polka dot gift bags

polka dot gift bags

i always bring fun little gifts to hand out with my gift cards when i go to a conference.  for the last 3 years at blissdom, i’ve attached posy pins to my gift cards.  this year, i decided to change things up a bit!

i saw these gift bags and decided i wanted to do something similar.

polka dot gift bags

i used a couple of different pinky coral craft paints and some “spouncers” from walmart.

polka dot gift bags

i ordered a couple sets of these muslin drawstring bags from here.  i love the thicker string than the typical bags i’ve found, and they were pretty reasonable – about 29 cents a piece.

polka dot gift bags

i put some cardstock un the pouch to protect the paint from seeping through to the other side.

polka dot gift bags

i squirted some of each paint color on an old pie tin.  no need to mix them together.  i was ok if the colors varied a bit.

polka dot gift bags

ok, here’s an example of too much paint on the sponge.

polka dot gift bags

so go back to the tin and bounce it until…

polka dot gift bags

it looks like this.  the sponge actually holds quite a bit of paint.

polka dot gift bags

i just eyeballed the center of the bag

polka dot gift bags

this is what it looks like if you only press the sponge on, but…

polka dot gift bags

you need to press the sponge and then twist until the entire circle is solid.  unless you want a more artsy look and not be solid…

polka dot gift bags

here’s a solid dot.  its still wet and bubbly.

polka dot gift bags

each of my bags were a little bit different, which made them really fun to make.

polka dot gift bags

which is a good thing when you make about 45 bags.

polka dot gift bags

some of my dots overlapped the edges and i liked the look.

polka dot gift bags

because these gifts were also promotional and for marketing purposes, i needed to make sure i had them well marked.  i printed out my business name on cardstock then cut it into little flags.

polka dot gift bags

i lined up the paper flags (not on the pull tie) and stitched the paper on with a contrasting stitch.

polka dot gift bags

i trimmed the threads, then admired my work!

polka dot gift bags

then it was time to fill the bags!  i stuffed in a folded post card with a discount code.

polka dot gift bags

and most all of the bags got a travel tissue case with my business card tucked in the fold.

polka dot gift bags

polka dot gift bags

just trying to get my name across.  do you think it was clear? ;)

polka dot gift bags

a handful of these bags had some fun strands of mini bunting!

polka dot gift bags

 so pretty, right?

insta-saturday

instafridaybutton

i’m a day late, but i’m linking up my weekly phone pics with jeannett again today!  i’m thepleatedpoppy on instagram if you want to follow along!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i traveled to blissdom last week  and the antics at our tiny airport had me laughing to myself.  as crazy as it is to travel and be away from my family for 5 days, i was so thankful to be able to fly from so close to home, to be able to be with the kids for lunch on the day i left and for coming home just in time for dinner.  having a little break is fun, but coming home is so much better!

IMG_7601

i spent a couple days at the handmade market at blissdom, and this was my setup.   i had a 50 lb weight limit for my checked luggage and this whole table of goodies weighed in at a hefty 49.5 lbs!  i call that efficient packing!

IMG_7623

lisa was my roomie for the weekend, and also my booth neighbor.  we had 2 great other booth neighbors: ashley of the shine project and rebecca of better life bags.  it was so great to meet them both!

IMG_7625

one thing i love about blissdom is getting to meet online friends in real life!  i have been wanting to meet mandy for so long!

IMG_7661

i think i brought about 45 goody bags for new and old friends.  it was so fun giving out these fun gifts!

IMG_7666

i love california, but we are missing out on one good thing:  cracker barrel!  breakfast for dinner?  yes, please!  biscuits as an appetizer?  um, ok!

IMG_7673

i missed my kids (and husband!) like crazy.  i was so thankful for facetime on my phone.  i was that person who was walking through the hotel, talking loud to my phone, showing the kids the little train track in the atrium, the water fountains, and the crazy boot print carpet.  and being able to give everyone goodnight kisses was the best!

IMG_7677

my 92 year old gram is doing the email now.  i am so excited about it!  i am horrible with traditional correspondence (letters and phone), so i’m hoping that email will work for us!

IMG_7704

one glorious day, all my kids were playing happily.  there was no fighting, or screaming, or whining.  and to top it off, i felt the urge to clean!  now, i rarely get that urge, so i decided to ignore all other responsibilities and just give into the urge.  i cleaned our bathroom for over 3 hours!  not only is it clean now, but i also cleaned out every cabinet and drawer.  it felt so good!

lily played with her babies for a couple hours and then gave herself a pedicure while her kids were all napping ;)

IMG_7705

gracie is almost 10 (aaaaack!), but she can still get lost for hours in play, and i love it.

IMG_7706

we stayed in our jammies until late in the afternoon.  it was a good day.

IMG_7708

i got 2 of these door mats from target, one for the front door and one for the back.  the gold tennies were just $7 on clearance at forever 21.  i wasn’t sure if i loved them or not, but for that price, it was worth a try!

IMG_7709

and here’s the result of all my hard work!  a clean bathroom!

IMG_7715

i didn’t stop at my bathroom.  i moved on to clean up my closet, organize our linens, and clean my room.  i did loads and loads of laundry.  when i went to put away my many tank tops, i realized i couldn’t shove another one into the drawer.  so i dumped out the whole drawer and refolded each and every one.  and then i realized i have a lot of tank tops!

over the last few years i have been wearing tank tops as undershirts almost every day.  i think it grew out of a mix of wanting an extra layer of warmth and for added modesty.

most of my tanks are mossimo from target, but lately i’ve been loving the racer back ones from forever 21 (and their low price – around $4?).

2 facts about silas:  he loves baths, and he has really long hair!

IMG_7739

emily and i were meeting about the stitch market, choosing our vendors for our upcoming market, and our girls were being awfully quiet for an awfully long time.  little did we know that they were putting on every hair clip and necklace we owned!

we have spring break this week and i have a list of projects to complete that is a mile long!  come back next week to see what i get done!

coral & grey book shelves

IMG_6011

recently i was contacted by P&G and the Home Depot, asking me to highlight the benefits of using Swiffer Sweeper and Mr. Clean Magic Erasers for painting projects.  i loved the idea because those are 2 products i use more than any other cleaning products in my house!

over the last few months (ok, 6+), i have been slowly redecorating my girls’ shared room.  there room has stayed the same for about 6 years, and i thought a little updating would be fun!  here’s a peek at my pinterest board that i used as an inspiration board for the redesign.

i can’t wait to reveal the whole room to you, but first that would involve finishing it, which i have yet to do – ha!

IMG_8340

the most major project so far is updating their bookshelves.  these bookshelves were hand-me-downs from a friend and have worked so well to suit our needs – to hold books, doll goodies, and “special things”.  when we got them they were painted this soft pale sage green.  while it is a very pretty color, it looked kind of washed out with all the other bright colors in the room.

colorful bookshelf update

i bought 2 colors of paint: flamingo dream and dark granite, both by behr from the Home depot.  i got the coral in a semi gloss and the grey in a high gloss.  i almost always paint in lower sheens like eggshell, but i really wanted this to have a glossy look to it.

IMG_5782

the first step was to clear off all the shelves, and that was a huge task!  you see, on the bottom shelf live these 2 little people and they really didn’t want to move out ;)

i did a quick wipe down on all the surfaces with the Swiffer Sweeper dry cloths to catch all the dust left behind on the shelves.  Swiffer products are the only products i use for dusting my house.  sean is allergic to lots of things, and when i dust with Swiffer products the dust is locked in on the cloth and not released into the air, making my job easier and his nose happy!

IMG_5807

after i moved the bookshelf outside, i removed the shelves and brackets and sanded down the whole thing (top, sides, shelves) with a palm sander and 150 grit sand paper.

IMG_5808

i then wiped down all of the surfaces again with the Swiffer Sweeper cloth to catch all the sanding dust.  having a clean surface to paint on is really important to good paint adhesion.  can you see how the white cloth has turned a pale sage green?

IMG_5814

then i looked over all the shelves and found a number of marks, mostly pencil.

IMG_5815

i used the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers on all the scuffs and scratches and pencil marks and with a little bit of light scrubbing, all the marks vanished.  we use Magic Erasers in our house all.the.time.  they are the only thing that gets our school desks clean (think pencil, marker, crayon, glue…) and also all the grimy finger prints on doorways.  i feel like my door trim looks like its been repainted after i give it a good cleaning with Magic Erasers.

after spot cleaning, i went ahead and wiped down all of the surfaces completely with a damp Magic Eraser and cleaned off even more of the sanding dust.

IMG_5820

i also chose not to prime first because of one reason:  i’m lazy.  well, and because i knew i’d be doing several coats of color and i did a really good job prepping the surfaces by sanding and cleaning.

also, i didn’t spray paint this at all.  i think spray paint is great for small projects and also for chairs with lots of spindles (’cause those are a pain to paint), but on larger projects like this, even with being really careful, you will see spray lines, which i hate.

i started by using an angled brush (i prefer Purdy brand, from the Home Depot) and painted all the corners.

IMG_5832

then i used a foam roller with a low nap and painted one side of the shelves.  luckily, the weather was really warm when i was painting so the paint dried really quickly.

IMG_5827

i ended up doing 3 coats on all the edges and corners, then i used a roller to coat the rest of the surfaces of the interior, and coated them 3 times as well.

IMG_5823

i gave the shelves at least 4 coats on both sides and the edges since they would get the most use with books sliding across them often.

colorful bookshelf update

after i finished the inside, i started on the outside with the high gloss grey.  i used a brush to paint all the trim and a roller to paint the top and sides.  i don’t love how the gloss looks with a roller, so i may eventually go back over it with a brush.  but i’m impatient and really wanted to get the shelf inside so i decided it was good enough!

after it had dried for a couple days, making sure the paint was completely hardened, i added the shelves and started filling them up.

IMG_6010

i love how bright it is!

IMG_6014

i bought these wire baskets from world market to hold all the loose doll clothes and accessories.  so much better than the random baskets we were using before.

IMG_6015

the girls like to collect random “special things” – rocks, stickers, notecards, etc, and we try to keep them corralled in the turquoise buckets on the top shelves, along with their sunglasses, piggy banks and bibles.

IMG_6019

their dolls sit on the bottom shelf, under a small metal rod we attached with a couple cup hooks that hold their hanging clothes.

colorful bookshelf update

having this big project done has motivated to wrap up the girls’ room!  i have a couple small projects and then one last big one:  making new bedding.  so excited for that one!

*disclosure:  P&G and Swiffer Sweeper supplied me with the products for this post (even though i already had them in my home!), but all of the opinions in this post are my own.  i really do love these products!*
