instafriday at the pleated poppy

jeannett thought it would be fun to tag some of us to do selfies (self portraits).  i thought i’d play along, but since my face thinks i’m 15 somedays and was broken out, this was the best i could do!  i think we all agree that wrinkles, grey hairs, and zits should not coexist.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we had a girls night last weekend!  we love taking little esther for the night.  after all, some day she’ll be my daughter-in-law ;)

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i love slow saturday mornings!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

the girls all dressed alike and choreographed a dance.  i totally remember doing this when i was little!

one of my sponsors, silly happy sweet, sent me a box full of goodies!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

my parents were here this week, so we got a date night – yay!  somehow, we always end up at the book store – something for him, something for me.

sean made us GIGANTIC heart shaped pancakes for valentines day.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we went out to morro bay with my parents on valentines day and rented a little boat to ride around the bay in with some drinks and appetizers.  i love my family!

just another reason to love me ;)

yes, i have been doing a lot of giveaways lately. a lot.

and i have one more for you today.

and you’re going to love love love me for it.

i have been teamed up with 31 beautiful and talented bloggers (how did i get so lucky?!) and we are doing a huge giveaway together:  we are giving away a $1500 visa gift card to one of you!

a.mazing!

what would you do with an extra $1500 floating around in your pocket?

first, i’d freak out.

what i wore wednesday at the pleated poppy

i’ve had this tulle skirt from target for years – i bought it when i was first pregnant with either gracie or lily, so its been awhile!  but finding the right coordinates for a tulle skirt can be tricky!  i wore this for church and tried to balance out the fanciness of the skirt with some more casual pieces, like the striped cotton shirt and the denim jacket.

striped top – forever 21

skirt – target

tights – target

wedges – payless

necklace – allora handmade

what i wore wednesday at the pleated poppy

as soon as i get home from church, i am pretty ready to shed my nicer clothes and get into something super cozy.  we still had to run some errands, so my pj’s were going to have to wait!  i was able to just swap out a few pieces and make a different version of a fun outfit.

what i wore wednesday at the pleated poppy

same top and necklace from church, but i added a warm sweater (it was freezing!), tall argyle socks, cuffed jeans and tennies.

i wasn’t sure how the mustard (with a slightly green tinge) would work with the coral necklace, but i actually love it!

sweater – forever 21 {new}

jeans – forever 21

socks – target

shoes – nordstrom rack

date night with seanie!  i wanted to dress cute, but our favorite restaurant has the best seats outside, so i knew i’d have to bundle up or i’d be miserable.

31 days to a heart of hospitality ebook {giveaway!} CLOSED

blissdom 2013 is just around the corner!  it was 4 years ago that i was surprisingly blessed with 2 fantastic roommates:  kristi and edie.  i didn’t know either of them before going to the conference, and was so freaked out by being outside of my comfort zone.  but both of these women were so warm and welcoming that they eased my fears and blessed my time at blissdom.

putting others at ease is edie’s gift.  she loves on people and welcomes them into her life.

and if you don’t have the pleasure of meeting edie in real life, you must meet her through her blog!

her home is a feast for the eyes:  all that color!  she has a knack for blending unexpected items, and making them work!  i could spend so much time pouring over all the pictures of her home.  actually, i did!  edie’s home was recently featured in better homes and gardens!

a couple years ago, edie’s home was burnt to the ground.  she blogged through the process of grieving and rebuilding.  and she did it gracefully.  she designed her new home with the purpose of serving others in mind.

edie has just released her ebook, 31 days to a heart of hospitality!

she includes all the fun stuff:  the recipes and tips, but what she starts with is even bigger.  she starts with the heart.   there’s no fluff, she goes straight to our real barriers with hospitality:  us.  our selfishness gets in the way of our ability to welcome others into our lives.  and being hospitable doesn’t just mean to our neighbors, but starts in our home, with our kids, with our husbands.

i am not quite through the book yet, but it is so good, you guys!  i am looking forward to finishing it up this week, and putting into practice what i’m learning!

get your own copy of edie’s ebook here for only $5!

and sweet edie has offered up 3 copies of her ebook for me to give to you!

to enter to win, just leave a simple tip for hospitality in the comments section.

craft weekend goodies {& crafts}

i wanted to share the fun goodies i got at craft weekend!  some are the crafts we made and some are fun gifts – yay!

the first is this ruffled apron we made the first night at cw.  i picked out fabric to coordinate with my bowls.  yup, i’m serious.

i got to lead a craft and i chose the “inspired canvas” i made a couple years ago.  it was so fun to see all the different versions the ladies made!

meg taught us how to make these fun covered button bracelets – love!

speaking of love, another craft – fabric covered wire letters, and the cutest mini sign from little branches!

i love a good magazine and this stitch|craft|create magazine did not disappoint!  and it was so fun seeing a few people i knew inside!

i love ike & co!  and how pretty is this rainbow necklace?!

and more jewelry!  the pretty yellow ring is from  and the dangling pearl earrings are from crystal b.  (do you see the tiny elephant charm on my lisa leonard charm bracelet?  i can’t wait for this month’s charm!)

one of the sweet guests at craft weekend made these amazing tea towels for meg, kimberlee, joy and i – i love it!

2 new mugs – yay!  one was a gift from meg and the red one is from dayspring.

this phone case/wallet is such a great idea, from sorta southern boutique.

i love this sweet notecard set from jenze!  check out her shop for so much more!

diy hand painted valentine’s day shirts {& a giveaway!} *CLOSED*

diy hand painted valentines shirts

deco art sent me a bunch of fun SoSoft fabric paint and my girls and i set out to play!

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i grabbed a handful of shirts from walmart for a few bucks each.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

love all the fun colors i got to play with, especially the metallics!

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i got these “spouncers” at walmart as well, and they worked perfectly.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

after prewashing the shirts i used cardboard and file folders to protect the insides of the shirts.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

 see?  perfect fit!

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i used my quilting ruler and “mark-b-gone” to make dots every 2 inches.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

can you see them?  teeny tiny.  when i made a mistake, i just sprayed a little water on them and poof!  they disappeared!

diy hand painted valentines shirts

for gracie’s shirt, i used the pretty metallic gold.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i just gently pushed the “spouncer” over the dot and kind of wiggled it to the perfect circle.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i left a few dots for the hearts.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

while i was working on their shirts, the girls got creative and worked on their own.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

so for the hearts i used freezer paper after the paint had thoroughly dried (about a day or so).

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i ironed the freezer paper over the dot, making sure the edges were down firm so i wouldn’t get any paint leakage.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i used the spouncer again, this time with a bright coral paint.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i peeled off the freezer paper and voila!  a pretty heart!

diy hand painted valentines shirts

lily’s shirt was the same theory, but without the hearts and a little more paint mixing.

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i love that both of the shirts can work for valentine’s day, but also for any other day – so not super valentine’s-y, right?

diy hand painted valentines shirts

i started lily’s shirt at the top.  i chose several shades of red and pink, and put them in color order.  i used the darkest red for a couple rows, then mixed the darkest red with the next color for a couple rows.  then i used the second color alone for a couple rows, then mixed with the next lighter color… see what i mean?

do you want to test out some of decor art‘s fabulous products?!  deco art will send out this  basket of goodies to one lucky reader of mine – yay!

just tell me what you’d love to make with some deco art paint!

instafriday

life rearranged

i’m linking up my weekly cell phone pics with jeannett again this week! i’m thepleatedpoppy on instagram if you want to follow me!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

if you know one thing about me, its that i like to start things and am really bad about finishing.  like the #365drawings i mentioned last week.  i’ve done 3.  and this one i traced, so i didn’t even really draw it. #cheater

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i cleaned off my desk!   and since a paperless, mess-less desk is a rarity, a picture was necessary.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

but just to the right of my desk was my cutting table, piled high!  totally completely unworkable.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i call this shot “look mom!  we’re not bickering!”

instafriday at the pleated poppy

this one is called “it’s my half birthday, so we get to have dessert!”

instafriday at the pleated poppy

mmmmm, the best.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

and then the others piled on.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

this one is for jeannett and joy.  i promised them i’d add it to my wiww post, but i totally forgot, so here you go ladies!

they didn’t believe me when i said i had footie jammies, so i had to prove it in a string of texts.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

but i do wear real clothes!  this was my favorite outfit this week.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i got in a bunch of new fabric this week and this is some of my favorite!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

we’ve switched up our schedule a bit, trying to keep/find the balance.  we’ve taken gracie out of gymnastics while the other 2 are in it, and she and i have an hour together to focus on homeschool.  an hour alone with this girl is pure joy.  even if it is while teaching grammar.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

did you see my giveaway i’m having for red letter words?  its a good one!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

this was a snuggly week.  ok, snuggly was also a great excuse to cover up my nappiness.  i was so sleepy this week that i fell asleep snuggling gracie in front of the fireplace after schooling.  then i followed that up with some snuggling with lu on the couch while i tried to wake up.  still trying to get back on the new wake-up-early schedule…

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i should really be doing the #365drawings for gracie since she doesn’t go a day without drawing!  i’ve been working on challenging her a bit more lately, so i was pulling out some things i remember from my college drawing classes.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i think this day i had about 7 hot drinks since it was so chilly, so when i sat down to draw for a bit while sean read to the kids, all i could think of was hot drinks!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

wanna know how wonderful instagram is?  i had someone comment that they liked my makeup in this pic.  filters are awesome!!!  i only had on mascara!  if only everyone could see me through instagram filters my getting ready time would only take about 5 minutes!

instafriday at the pleated poppy

it was 1:30 and i realized i hadn’t fed the kids lunch yet.  oops.  so i whipped up some nasty good for the kids.  and then i made a bowl up for myself.

i’ll be honest, i only made it halfway through the bowl before i had to push it aside.  it was so yummy at first, and then…. blech.

instafriday at the pleated poppy

i got this pretty orchid delivered this week – such a fun gift!

how was your week?  are you linking up with jeannett?  you should!
