what i wore

welcome to “what i wore” at the pleated poppy!  share with me your fashion posts and we can inspire each other!  i started this originally as motivation to get out of my daily uniform of jammies or sweats, but now i am encouraged and held accountable to put a few extra minutes aside for myself and try new things.  i’d love for you to join me!

this week i pulled out the tripod and finally figured out how to use my remote (which immediately ran out of batteries – sheesh!).  so i am on my way to better outfit pictures and hope to continue to step it up a bit around here!

day 1

jacket – stitch fix //  cardigan – old navy //  shirt – forever 21 //  jeans – forever 21 //  boots – zappos //  belt – target // necklaces – made by me

our weather is silly right now, so i have to layer up for the super chilly mornings, then slowly peel off when i get warmer throughout the day.  this striped shirt is my go-to favorite shirt – it works with everything, is figure forgiving, and is so comfy.  and then there’s this utility jacket – its perfection.  i’ve been leaning into neutrals this year, but i do like a little pop of color, hence the tassle necklaces.

someone asked me last week if i do the front tuck all day , and the answer is yes.  a full tuck of my looser shirts can look a little funny, and sometimes untucked looks a bit sloppy, so the partial tuck defines the waist slightly without being too stuffy.

and for more details on my new boots, see this post where i reviewed a handful of booties.

day 2

cardigan – forever 21 //  v-neck shirt – forever 21 //  jeans – forever 21 //  boots – zappos //  gold necklace – lisa leonard designs //  coral necklace – 31 bits

the anti-neutral outfit.  this was inspired by unusual color combinations i’ve been loving lately, like this.  and yes, the boots again.  you’ll be seeing these a lot.  i like my pants to hit just above the top of the bootie, to cuffing is an essential.  socks also are essential to this cold-ankled girl, so i like to keep it fun with a funky printed sock.

day 3

chambray shirt – forever 21 //  black jeans – forever 21 // black quilted slip-ons – target // necklace – lisa leonard

classic casual outfit, never disappoints.  another one of those go-to outfits for when i can’t decide what to wear.  the necklace is sentimental, marking 5 years homeschooling/at my kids’ school – it says “semper discentes” which means “always learning together”.  tip on the shoes – great price but they don’t breathe at all.  nice & comfy but they definitely need little socks.

day4

cardigan – forever 21 //  shirt – stitch fix //  ponte pants – stitch fix //  boots – off broadway shoes //  cuff – made by a friend

a word on ponte pants:  they are a nice thick fabric, much thicker than, say, cotton leggings.  i like these because they are fitted much like leggings, but have interesting seaming, pockets, etc.  more structured.  also, they are slightly looser in the calf/ankle area, more of a straight leg look.  i love them for a comfortable upgrade from the leggings.

sweater – forever 21 //  jeans – forever 21 // v-neck shirt – forever 21 //  boots – zappos //  necklace – lisa leonard designs // earrings – nickel & suede

pretty much an all new outfit, and i think you’ll be seeing a lot more of it!  i was shopping at forever 21, trying to find some cozy sweaters, finding only the aztec sweaters that i’ve seen all over, or cheap, scratchy looking ones.  mostly all in black and white.  but then i stumbled upon this navy and deep mustard lovely.  i slipped it on and it was so cozy!  then those jeans… i just walked past them and they caught my eye.  semi natural looking distressing and the perfect fit – not too loose and not too skinny.  i did do a minor tailoring job on the waist to get a better fit – i’ll have to share that later.  these are also the flat booties i decide to keep (see this post).  i wore them all day without even thinking about them being on my feet – so comfortable.

bootie review

no, not booty, but bootie.  as in the things on your feet.  i’m sure i’ll get some awesome spam comments on this one…

i’ve been getting so many questions about some boots i posted recently on instagram, so i wanted to share the brands, links and a teeny review for you.

i’m super opinionated about everything booties, so it took me a long time to make my final decisions on these.

bootie review

top left – softwalk rocklin, sand dusty suede leather

top right – kork-ease velma, meteora grey

bottom left – kork-ease michelle, meteor grey

bottom right – steve madden gilte, cognac leather

i bought these all from zappos.  i love using zappos.  they probably hate me.  i bet i have ordered 40 pairs of boots from them, only keeping a few!  thankfully, they have free shipping both ways so i can return easily.  beyond my pickiness, i also have a really hard time finding shoes that fit me.  i have big feet and narrow ankles and calves.  trying to find a good fit that doesn’t look baggy is tricky.  thats why ordering several pairs at a time is better than going to a shoe store.  i can try them on in the comfort of my home, but also try them with different outfits to see if they will really work right for me.

so do you want to know which pair i kept?  first of all, these are the 4 i narrowed down to from the original 6 pairs.  i was looking for shorter boots and the first 2 were a tiny bit too high.  even though they weren’t what i was looking for, i immediately decided to keep the wedge booties because LOOK AT THEM!  i first saw them on emily, and thought i’d give them a try.  they are the perfect brown with a hint of grey, and are actually really comfortable for wedges.  but my goal was to find short ankle length booties, so i now had 3 boots to choose from.  the softwalk rocklin pair were like pillows – so soft and comfy.  but they were too light for me and not quite fitted enough for my narrow feet.  i loved the kork-ease michelle pair, but they were the exact color as the pair of kork-ease wedges i decided to keep.  seemed a little redundant.  so that left the steve madden pair and i love them!  they are so comfortable that i didn’t even think about them on my feet all day! the color is the same pair as my favorite tall boots and go with everything.  i do wish they were a little shorter, but they are the best i could find.

now i’m thinking i’d love a super short pair of black booties.  i may give the kork-ease a try in black, or do a search for more…

have you found the “perfect” pair of booties?  please share!
